Some explanation first: San Antonio Rose was the title of a 1961 Ray Price album celebrating the songs of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys. In 1980, Price released another album by the same title, this one in tandem with Willie Nelson, who had appeared as a backup musician on the original LP. The back-story here may be a tad involved, but the music on Willie and Ray’s San Antonio Rose is straight-ahead, uncluttered classic country. The years had been kind to them both — Price’s manly baritone conveys heartache within its stalwart tones, while Nelson’s well-seasoned tenor suggests endless miles of experience. Price renews his status as one of country’s most soulful crooners on Willis’ “Faded Love” and revives his signature hit “Release Me” with effortless authority. Nelson shines on a bluesy version of “Night Life” and a wistful take on “My Life’s Been A Pleasure.” And Ex-Texas Playboy Johnny Gimble invokes Wills’ spirit by adding jazz-tinged fiddle lines. Price and Nelson sound relaxed and fully engaged throughout, making San Antonio Rose a timeless recording of interest to any country fan.

Texas Swing At Its Finest

Of all the many fine duets with Willie and friends over the years, I believe this one with Ray Price is my favorite. Ray's voice presents a perfect counterpoint to Willie's. The band is just awesome and the Bob Wills - Texas swing sound is just fantastic. This is a perfect country album. Unlike so many of the modern "country" albums we are subjected to these days, this is the real deal -- yeeehaaaa!

Country Music At It's Best!

In my opinion this is one of the best albums that Willie Nelson has ever made and a must have for any Willie Nelson or Ray Price fan. Willie was becoming the country music icon he is today and Ray Price was already country music royalty. Together with top musicians like Buddy Emmons on steel guitar, Johnny Gimble on fiddle and Willie’s band, it created one of country musics best albums. Night Life, Cold War, Funny How Time Slips Away are outstanding on all levels but then again the whole album great. It’s been one of my favorite albums since I first heard it back 1980 and remains so today. Treat yourself to this album you won’t be disappointed.
