iTunes Review

The San Patricios were Irish immigrant soldiers who deserted the United States Army during the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848 and fought for the other side. The story so fascinated Chieftains leader Paddy Moloney that he and guitarist Ry Cooder decided to join forces and tell the story together. As a result, the album plays best in its entirety where one can hear the tale unwind and feel the general pace of the tunes, as many serve as complimentary pieces to each other. A number of Mexican musicians were employed (Los Tigres del Norte, Chavela Vargas) along with Linda Ronstadt, Liam Neeson, Galician bagpiper Carlos Nunez and orchestrator extraordinaire Van Dyke Parks. The songs move between Spanish and English and tell tales of unorthodox heroism and genuine love and loss. History offers no easy answers, but the beauty of songs such as “La Golondrina,” “The Sands of Mexico,” “Luz de Luna” with Chavela Vargas and “El Relampago” with Lila Downs make for musical transcendence no matter what the language.

San Patricio

The Chieftains have really done a masterful job in creating this album. As a collector of Mexican music and some Irish, such interpretations of these musical gems by Ronstad, Downs and others is just superb.

San Patricio

Terrific! Who knew that Mexican songs would mix so well with Irish folk tunes? But they do and the result is wonderful. I can't help but smile when I hear these new takes on classic Mexican tunes like La Iguana, La Golondrina, El Relampago, and Cancion Mixteca. This is made even more spectacular by the presence of many Mexican and Mexican American stars such as Lila Downs, Linda Ronstadt, Mariachi Santa Fe de Jesus, Los Tigres del Norte and others. Kudos to The Chieftains and Ry Cooder who together produced a multicultural masterpiece.

Masterful

This is a wonderful piece of work. Congratulations to all the participants and the producers. The Chieftains and all the others created a work of unique substance and beauty that enlightens all the senses. If you keep creating this level of quality, I and many others will keep buying it. Congratulations!

The original traditional Irish folk band, as far as anyone who came of age in the 1970s or '80s is concerned, is the Chieftains. Their sound, built largely on Paddy Moloney's pipes, is otherworldly, almost entirely instrumental, and seems as though it comes out of another age of man's history. That they...
