iTunes Review

When Sand’s eponymous eight-song debut surfaced in 1973, it was packaged as two one-sided records — the idea was to stack both platters on your hi-fi so when one side finished, the needle retracted allowing the second platter to drop and play. Sand were a Portland quintet playing some of the most underrated country rock of the 1970s. Everyone but the drummer sang harmonies and every song here is catchy and indicative of a time in music when bands like Buffalo Springfield, Eagles, CSN&Y and Poco were hip. Sand were as good as any of their peers, but like many other bands that didn’t land a radio hit, they vanished into obscurity and then cult status amongst the vinyl hunting hounds. But their musicianship was unrivaled, especially that of pedal steel player Dan Ross as evidenced by the flowing solo on “Who Ya Tryin’ To Fool” (a song that influenced Nels Cline’s solo on Wilco’s “Impossible Germany”). The slow groove of “Lovin’ You” revealed that the band also dabbled in some jazz influenced rock a-la Steely Dan, and “Lady Of Mine” is a country funk gem that should have been their big hit.

The Promise of the Seventies...

Weekend nights we'd drive to the Faucet or out to the Inferno in Portland to hear our hometown heroes, Sand. Jack and Dan and Dan and the crew anchored our dancing. They had the promise of making the big time because they'd recorded in LA, "continuously flowing sand"-a double disk with only one side recorded so you could play it without turning the record over. The mix included guitar riffs as diverse as Thin Lizzy and Country Steel guitar America. We loved 'em. Their work was original, their sychnronization tight, their harmony sweet. It was the best of times and couldn't last...listen and wish you could have been on that dance floor.

Classic Country Rock

Growing up in Portland Oregon, Jack Meussdorfer, later Jack Charles (Quarterflash) was always at the front end of anything good in music. I had the pleasure of seeing Jack play in grade school bands and work his way up through the Portland music scene. This record brings the best of influences, Buffalo Springfield, Poco, Loggins & Messina etc. to the forefront. The vocals, harmony, and guitars are lively, fresh and still in this era most energetic. This is a great band, with great songs. I recommend this highly to anyone who likes the bands I have mentioned. Hey Jack, any chance for a reunion tour?

So glad to have found this album!

I first bought this album in vinyl, 1974. It had two vinyl disks, but only 3 sides (the fourth was a groove 1/8" width, no music). I played the heck out of this album, and it is the ONLY one of my "lost" vinyl albums that I remember enough to replay in my mind to this day. Kind of rock/country/alternative/progressive/new age blend band. Danny Gooch is the only musician I remember. [There's a lick at the beginning of "Mystery" that Death Cab for Cutie might have "borrowed" from this album for their "Soul Meets Body".] All 8 cuts are perfect gems that are still good today. These guys were great musicians; Where are they now? The kind of album that continues to "grow" on you. Thanks, ITunes! I've been looking for this one for a long time now. I bought it--again--38 years later, and I still love it!
