iTunes Review

Sandinista! is what happens when a band is brave enough to fail — and then turns that failure inside out. At 36 tracks it's messy, brilliant, gorgeous, infuriating, necessary, and one would expect nothing less (and God help us, nothing more) from "the only band that matters." Dipping their fingers in every musical pie from gospel ("The Sound of Sinners") to disco ("Lightning Strikes"), Europop ("Hitsville U.K.") to Dadaist noise collage ("Silicone On Sapphire"), the Clash refused to edit themselves, named the album in tribute to Nicaraguan insurgents, and thumbed their noses at the expectations of fans and critics alike. The conventional wisdom is that there's a solid single album inside Sandinista!, just waiting to be let out. Don't believe it. There are some real missteps, but every last track is at the very least interesting: lyrically, musically, or just in terms of the sonic furniture. Trying to cherry-pick "the good ones" runs contrary to the messy, democratic spirit of the whole project. And besides, one person's necessity is another's throwaway is another's guilty pleasure. Just let go of all expectations, embrace the chaos, and actually listen.

The Clash's Magnum Opus

by Russ99

I'm a bit dismayed at some of the user-reviewers not really getting Sandinista! But, maybe it's even better if you're in the know... If you want the usual record company-peddled tunes, go buy some of the Clash's other, more popular albums full of hit songs. But if you have a musically open mind, check it out.

It's hard to believe such a magnificent set of music was released due to the Clash trying to get one-up in their endless battle with their record company, but out of that happy accident sprouted one of the more diverse albums in rock history. Despite the claim of excessive filler by some, every track has it's place. Intended or not, this album is really meant to listen to as a whole, rather than just the parts.

And while some have disdain on the weird brilliance that is SIde Six, many more appreciate it for it's genius. While Joe, Mick and Mikey Dread were probably fiddling around with the dials and effects for fun just to complete the album, they unwittingly created a punk/rock/reggae dub side as vital as King Tubby's best.

Only one that passes

I truly hate this band, as they were middle-class phoneys trying to pass as punk rockers. But if you were looking to get anything out of these guys, 'Sandinista' is the only album worth listening to. And the only band that matters is Uriah Heep. Nuff said.

Sandinista!- A Long Play Record

by Bush Monkey

I first heard it a college in the early 80's. I was a Clash fan, especially the early albums. Comparing this to past albums is hard to do. As you must realize we listened to whole albums back then, and this album came with all the lyrics. I think it helps to put this "album on" and let it play. You will find gems you really love that sound like the good ol' Clash, like "Somebody Got Murdered" or new sounds like the waltz, "Rebel Waltz". "If Music Could Talk" has two sets of lyrics going at once. This was Record of the Year" for Rolling Stone Magazine back then. Why not five stars? Because London Calling is the standard for a five, and this is not quite as good as that. But you already have that one, now don't you!? Try Sandinista!

Biography

Formed: 1976 in London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s

The Sex Pistols may have been the first British punk rock band, but the Clash were the definitive British punk rockers. Where the Pistols were nihilistic, the Clash were fiery and idealistic, charged with righteousness and a leftist political ideology. From the outset, the band was more musically adventurous,...
