Album Review
Santana III is an album that undeservingly stands in the shadows behind the towering legend that is the band's second album, Abraxas. This was also the album that brought guitarist Neal Schon — who was 17 years old — into the original core lineup of Santana. Percussionist Thomas "Coke" Escovedo was brought in to replace (temporarily) José Chepitó Areas, who had suffered a brain aneurysm, yet who recovered quickly and rejoined the band. The rest were Carlos, organist Gregg Rolie, drummer Michael Schrieve, bassist David Brown, and conguero Michael Carabello. "Batuka" is the powerful first evidence of something being very different. The band was rawer, darker, and more powerful with twin leads and Schon's harder, edgier rock & roll sound paired with Carlos' blend of ecstatic high notes and soulful fills. It cooks — funky, mean, and tough. "Batuka" immediately transforms itself into "No One to Depend On," by Escovedo, Carabello, and Rolie. The middle section is highlighted by frantic handclaps, call-and-response lines between Schon and Rolie, and Carlos joining the fray until the entire track explodes into a frenzied finale. And what's most remarkable is that the set just keeps on cooking, from the subtle slow burn of "Taboo" to the percussive jam workout that is "Toussaint l'Overture," a live staple in the band's set list recorded here for the first time (and featuring some cooking Rolie organ work at its beginning). "Everybody's Everything" is here, as is "Guajira" and "Jungle Strut" — tunes that are still part of Santana's live show. With acoustic guitars, gorgeous hand percussion, and Santana's fragile lead vocal, "Everything's Coming Our Way" is the only "feel good" track here, but it's a fitting way to begin winding the album down with its Schon and Santana guitar breaks. The album ends with a completely transformed reading of Tito Puente's "Para los Rumberos," complete with horns and frantic, almost insanely fast hand drumming and cowbell playing. It's an album that has aged extremely well due to its spare production (by Carlos and the band) and its live sound. This is essential Santana, a record that deserves to be reconsidered in light of its lasting abundance and vision.

Santana Virtuosity At It’s Best
I am completely dumfounded that no one before me has written a review on this the supreme Santana LP! I was a freshman in college when this came out, and I know that some of you out there will write this off as the ravings of an aging sentimentalist. So be it. But even then, I knew that this was something special. The breakout Santana LP proved that Latin influences had a place at the table, and the Abraxas LP took those themes to heady new heights. But it was Santana III that showed Carlos & Company to be musicians at the top of the game. Here was virtuosity on guitar as had not been heard since Jimi. And, dare I say, is hardly heard today – with the possible exception of Buckethead. I played Toussaint L' Overture for my 18 year-old son. He was blown away! And this is a kid who has been doing nothing for months but playing Guitar Hero on PS2. Give it a try and you will see that this is no sentimental journey, but a genuine discovery of music that is as good today as it was then. ‘Nuff said....putting the headphones back on!

This is one of the finest albums ever recorded. The diversity here is astounding. I have listened to this music hundreds of times over the last 3 decades, and never tire of its beauty. To say that it is profound is a severe understatement...
Santana III
What can I say? The early Santana band WAS, IS and ALWAYS will be my all-time favorite band! I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area listening to Santana live at every opportunity I got .... the early Santana band in which this album represents the last of the original lineup... was their BEST! For this album they had added the incredibly talented 17 year old guitarist Neal Schon to the lineup (as if they needed more firepower for the guitars!). Together with Carlos Santana they create one helluva masterpiece here of guitar playing! Every song on this album is so damn powerful. Maybe I am just an old guy getting sentimental about my high school days ... but they ALL sound just as good as when I was 18 and this was released in the summer after my HS graduation. I invite all you younger kids who think you have heard Santana because of songs like Smooth.. or Evil Ways... or even Oye Como Va... to discover this gem of an album that has definitely been underrated for years! ENJOY... and tell your friends!
