The Best Tenor of the new millenium
Juan Diego is without doubt the best tenor of the new era. I'm proud he's from my country Peru. Viva Juan Diego!
This is a great instrument
I am a little late in becoming aware of this wonderful, exciting singer. He has an instrument of range and timbre that is more than most tenors could dream of having. Visually he is free of any mannerisms or signs of bad production. He has such an easy top it's almost a detriment as part of the thrill of tenor watching is the anxiety over whether they're going to make that top note. All this said, he does some very, very unexpected embellishments and changes of notes in repertory standards that I would compare to someone adding a cheeseburger and fries to Da Vinci's painting of The Last Supper. I wish he would be a little more conservative with these, or apply them to repertory where they are more customary (like Purcell) They make me wonder if he isn't damaging his career with these errors in judgment. For a Spanish speaking singer his English diction is nearly free from any idiosyncracies caused by his native tongue.
