iTunes Review

Coming out of Baton Rouge, La., Webbie emerged in the early '00s, dropping two successful collaboration albums with Lil Boosie (Ghetto Stories and Gangsta Muzik). Down with Trill Entertainment, he's had several hit singles over the years, specifically "Bad Bitch" and "Independent." Savage Life 3 is his third solo record; it picks up where part two left off, jumping out of the speakers with devastatingly bass-heavy 808 kicks, bright handclaps, stuttering snares, wheezing keys, and supremely funky, surprisingly soulful melodies. Lyrically, he’s all about the ladies, with several choice tracks revolving around his skills, but he also gets more serious with dedications to his father ("Pops I Luv U") and the mother who passed away when he was just a kid ("Momma"). Rocking a strong flow that sounds somewhat similar to the Birdman, he also benefits from solid collaborations with Lil Phat, Lil Trill, and K.T.

Webbie was only eight when his mother died of cancer. Bouncing from family member to family member was hard, but the West Coast tapes his cousin would loan him provided Webbie with rebellious music that spoke to his inner tension. Later, and not even a teenager...
