Schmidt deserves to be heard
I believe this is the third available recording of this work[Jarvie-CSO Chandos]. F. Schmidt' sSymphony's are some of the finest works in genre[below the top tier of Beeth, BRahms, mahler, etc]-though even there they could stand up to comparison. The slow movements are emotional, dramatic and technically supreme. I would describe the music as a more modern Brahms, mixed with the influences of Mahler, Strauss, and Bruckner. Symphony 4 has found several major advocates, and deservedly so, but really all four of Schmidt's symphony's are exquisite. If you are searching for something outside the box, check out Franz Schmidt. You will be thoroughly rewarded.[His chamber music is excellent also.]
