A Priceless Undertaking

Any lover of music, should write a personal thank you letter to Herr Dietrich-Fischer Dieskau. Schubert is considered by many (and rightfully so), the best song composer of all time. He had an ability to set text to music that went beyond the understanding of most people. The single best interpreter of these songs is Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. The world has yet to see an artist that can give these songs life the way Fischer-Dieskau did, and possibly never will again. With poise and elegance, he took on the project with his piano playing counterpart, Gerald Moore to record the complete songs of Schubert. An essential tool for any singer of Lied and a worthy investment for any music lover. From his longing for his late love in An Emma and his rich chest tones in Der Wanderer(D. 493) to his excitement in Halt! and Ungeduld in Die Schöne Müllerin and his despair and terror in Letzte Hoffnung (Winterreise) and Doppelgänger (Schwanengesang), he has hit the nail on the head. I would recommend this investment to anyone. It is in many ways a pinnacle of recorded art.

A landmark recording

One could argue that, among Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's many recordings of Schubert lieder there are some discs, here and there, that have better performances than this set. However, there's no other way to get such a rich collection of lieder in one shot. Fischer-Dieskau recorded many versions of the three song cycles included in this set, and there are notably several versions of Wintereisse that are superior to this one. But this is his only recording of many of the songs, in this set of all of Schubert's lieder for male voice. For collectors, and real fans of Fischer-Dieskau, this may be just a starting point, but for others who simply want to get to know this great music, there's no other set to consider. With 21 CDs worth of music, and what is a very reasonable price, you simply can't go wrong.
