What a voice!
Gerald Finley has power, finesse, and a beautiful, clear and rich tone. There is nothing forced or harsh, nor anything covered or swallowed in his delivery. His vibrato embellishes without distracting from either pitch or the line of the music. He imbues each phrase with emotional character. These short pieces are little gems. Drake's playing is beautiful as well, and his playing of the piano, as well as the individual instrument's character, match Finley's voice wonderfully. I had the good fortune to hear Finley sing several back-to-back performances of Doctor Atomic. He's one of the best baritones alive today. It's no wonder the New Yorker's Alex Ross recommended this album as one of the best of 2008. You will not regret buying it!
Compelling Intelligence and Art
Gerald Finley first came to my attention when I saw his riveting interpretation in film of Britten's Owen Windgrave. A strong and incisive performance, wonderfully realized to capture his full vocal and dramatic abilities. Then I heard this recording next and was transformed. I had never heard such powerful and beautiful singing of these pieces. And the artistry in company of Julius Drake is a perfect partnering of musical intelligence. Drake makes the piano another voice completely attuned to Finley's every note. When the music stopped, I felt completely in another realm. It's a remarkable pairing, and for anyone who has not heard these works, it will be a purchase for a lifetime.
