Technically Excellent, Many Embellishments
Those who think of Joplin as a composer of concert music will find Peskanov's constant departure from the original score more than a little frustrating. Those who think of Joplin's music as jazz will find Peskanov's interpretations dazzling and unique. His embellishment of 'The Easy Winners' borders on the astounding, and will surely cause Joplin purists to pull out their hair in outrage. With the exception of 'Maple Leaf Rag', Peskanov adheres to Joplin's original tempos nicely, which is refreshing change in this age of "Breakneck Joplin". Overall, this recording will rate 5 stars for the non-purist, and 1 star for the purist. Since I am undergoing a transition from the former to the latter, I'll give it 3 stars.
just fyi
vkseven or whatever, even joplin didn't play what was written 100 percent of the time! We know this because of his piano rolls. If you would like to see what he played in those rolls on paper, hinson edited a few of his rags with added commentary such as grace notes joplin played in his recordings. Part of the wonders of ragtime music is the departure from what is written while still maintaining most of the songs true esscence. This recording is good. Definatly buy the piano version of joplin, not some transcription for some weird instrument or whatever... This or Levin, those are my suggestions.
Captures the essence of Joplin
Peskanov captures somthing most other Joplin artists seem to miss. His phrasing is elegant yet restrained. He moves the listener subtly but effectively. Simply a joy to listen to!
