Album Review

Continuing their mission of creating spiritually uplifting pop music, Scream of the Crop is several notches above the band's previous Live at Wetlands release. This is mostly due to the fact that, in the studio, the band can rely more on the interplay of their gentle acoustic guitars and less on the flashy guitar pyrotechnics that they fall back on in concert. The music is the band's usual mix of optimistic '60s folk-rock crossed with the strained anthemia of what the genre became when placed in arenas in the '70s. What differentiates Soulfarm is their occasional emphasis on Middle Eastern-sounding scales, which is no surprise given guitarist C. Lanzbom's years as a leading session guitarist in Israel. When the band lets this guide, as on "Intro" or "The Ride" (where it provides the hook), they are at their most successful. Otherwise, they tend to fall back on cliché chord progressions and lyrics, like the power-ballady, lighter-waving "Something Special." Of note also is "From This Day On," a collaboration with Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros founder Perry Farrell. Though failing to ignite, the track does effectively fuse Farrell's style with Soulfarm's.

Scream for more!!!

BS'D I am not sure if Apple has computers writing reviews for them, but why must reviewers on iTunes compare unique talent such as Soulfarm, with another groups or groups who not only approach music with a totally different philosophy, but a totally different sound. This is a superb cd. From the 'it makes you want dance even when you're sitting' LET THE WHEELS ROLL and AIN'T WE ALL to the sweet tribute to R' Shlomo Carlebach, HOLY BROTHER, Soulfram will take your emotions on a roller coaster ride. If you buy this cd, you will buy them all. I wish iTunes had LIVE AT CLUB TZORA. That has one of my favorite Soulfarm songs, DIG DOWN DEEPER, but good for them for starting to notice more of the 'offspring' of Reb Shlomo's music such as Soulfarm, Moshav, RebbeSoul, Neshama Carlebach even Matisyahu and, of course the master himself, R' Shlomo. We are up to 3 of his cds. 2 more then before! Download this cd. Put your headphones on and enjoy!!!!

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s

With influences ranging from country to world music, Soulfarm (formerly Inasense) is a rootsy pop/rock unit that was formed in New York in 1991, but often sounds like it could be a California band of the 1970s. Two members of the band, guitarist C. Lanzbom and lead singer Noah Solomon Chase, met in Jerusalem, Israel, in the 1980s. Lanzbom had been teaching music in Jerusalem and one of his students was Chase (who was in a local band called Noah's Ark at the time). After playing together in Israel,...
