Album Review
Coming off a Best New Artist Award at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, the members of Avenged Sevenfold returned to the studio, ambitious to create an exciting follow-up to City of Evil, and their self-titled release often focuses hard on pushing the songs into non-metal territory. Their signature blistering Yngwie Malmsteen guitar arpeggios and lightning fast double-kick drums are still evident, while AS show their unbridled enthusiasm to be as inventive as possible as they run through a staggering amount of production enhancements: four songs have string arrangements; violinists, pianists, and vocalists make guest appearances here and there; "A Little Piece of Heaven" is a strange Mr. Bungle-type number with sax, clarinet, trombone, and trumpet; and "Unbound (The Wild Ride)" throws in the most un-metal addition of all — a children's choir. Some of these enhancements help take the songs to the next level, while others give the sensation of inappropriately mashed-up styles. Vocalist M. Shadows, who required surgery on his vocal cords after Waking the Fallen, shows that his training with Ron Anderson (vocal coach for Layne Staley, Axl Rose, and Chris Cornell) has been for the greater good. Rather than screaming or doing the metal growl, he sings in a few gritty voices, showing an obvious Mike Patton influence, and actually sounds pitch-perfect. His skills and the entire band's technical ferocity are flawless as ever, and although they get lost in a cluttered vision, their willingness to experiment is admirable.

Great Album
by CL18This album is awesome. But I listended to it too much and it's already old haha. But still great. I just have a couple questions: When are they gonna do a greatest hits album and why haven't they done some acoustic versions of some of their better songs? These would be great additions to any A7X collection.

Every Song a Perfection; Song by Song Review
by M3talFanaticA piece of art, from an amazing band, really creating their own kind of genre with this album. >Critical Acclaim (8.5/10) A great opening song for a great album. Instrumentals lead to a great guitar intro, and M. Shadow's "Shh, be quiet, you might p**s somebody off." Really has a deep meaning to it with many government references. All in all. Awesome. >Almost Easy (9.5/10) Just about as perfect as you can get. Amazing guitar playing on both Zacky and Synyster's part, as well as great vocals from every member of the band. >Scream (8/10) When you first listen to it, its a great song, and really sticks with you for a while. Unlike some of A7X's best songs, after a time, it really becomes repetitive. Great song all in all, yet, not their best. >Afterlife (9.5/10) Again, another piece of perfection from Avenged Sevenfold. Stays with you forever. It never becomes repetitive, and whenever I hear it, I really get into it. It too has a deep meaning, "Give me your hand but realize I just wanna say goodbye.
Please understand I have to leave and carry on my own life." And many others. Really, one of their best songs. >Gunslinger (8.5/10) Now here, they take a completely different tone, taking on a country effect. Then, after a great acoustic guitar intro, then blast straight into a yell of YEAH! by Shadows, and the tone of the song picks up with their normal hard rock guitar riffs. Great song. Really shows how they can handle any kind of genre well. >Unbound (The Wild Ride) (8/10) When I first heard the song... I really was a little puzzled. While it was a great song, it had a different sound to it. More like something you would find with their City of Evil album. Had a little bit of the tone like The Wicked End had; with the vocals and instrumentals, and guitar riffs. >Brompton Cocktail (?/10) I have heard quite a lot about this song. Many of my A7X friends, say its great, others say its terrible. Personally, its one of my favorite songs. Out of all these guys have put out, this song really appeals to me, because the words, just like all of the songs they have done, are very deep. I would give it a 9.5-10/10, but it soley depends on the person. >Lost (8/10) Great intro of duel guitars from Zacky and Synyster, really showing how the two co-mingle perfectly. Really one person rather than just two extremely talented guitarists. However, as the song progresses (about 1/5 the way through), with the introduction of The Rev's vocals. it takes on a completely un-Avenged Sevenfold turn. Not that it is a bad song, it's just quite different than what you're used to. >A Little Piece of Heaven (10/10) When I first heard the song, I didn't know what to think. I just could not comprehend what I was hearing. It was just too amazing. An immediate favorite of mine. From the humorously disturbing lyrics, to the extra instrumentals in place of a lot of the guitar, (trumpets, piano, and stringed instruments) to every part of the song, it is unforgettable. Whether or not you liked the transition from Waking the Fallen to City of Evil, you will like this song, no matter your preference of genre. This song will remain. Although the song is quite long (8:00), you don't get bored. It keeps you interested until the end, and wants you begging or more. >Dear God (9/10) A great closing song for an amazing album. Takes on the more country genre once again, with an acoustic guitar, and amazing vocals from M. Shadows. Once again, whether or not you like where the band has gone, you will love this album. I have been a fan of A7X since Waking the Fallen, and this album was not a disappointment. CD is a perfect 10/10.
