The first cut here, “In Venere Veritas,” is decorated with some hints of bygone goth, like the Cure-esque keyboards and minor chord arpeggios that are slightly reminiscent of the Mission U.K. But the driving chorus is pure Generation Hot Topic emo. Most of Screamworks: Love In Theory and Practice abounds in similarly melodic alternative rock with a crystalline radio-friendly production and lyrics that mostly muse on severance. Screamworks is a break-up album. Frontman Ville Valo went on record to say that these songs comprise a sonic diary of an ended affair and that they also represent a cathartic, primal scream. “Heartkiller” is a perfect example with its pained (albeit melodramatic) lyrics that jump right off the pages of Valo’s Moleskine notebook, while ‘80s-inspired keyboards pulse under winding guitars and a simple but steady meat-and-potatoes drum beat. “Katherine Wheel” is another standout with poetic lyrics bonded to the barbed song hooks and doubled vocal tracks with melodies that closely follow the lead guitar line.

definetely a new direction for HIM.
While screamworks is obviously a step away from previous HIM albums, it's still valo's unmistakeable style. I know a lot of people were disappointed with Matt Squite producing it, but personally, I think he's done a remarkable job on it. Screamworks' style leans towards the faster songs on Razorblade Romance and some Venus Doom-ish melodies and seems to bring up all these words we've never heard before in the lyrics. As for vocals, I think this is Valo's best performance since... well, a long time ago.
It's facing forward into a new direction for HIM.

True fans of HIM need to stop complaining.... Screamworks is Amazing!
Why is it that when a great band like HIM, who puts so much effort into such beautiful songs and tries to be diverse, ends up getting criticized for no good reason, when Screamworks (along with every other album of theirs) clearly proves otherwise? HIM is just a diverse band. They try to go for different styles every time. Can these different styles please everyone? NO. But maybe someone who disliked a style that you liked, now likes the style that you dislike. They are trying their very best to please everyone. Even if it's not all at the same time. I hear people complain that Dark Light and Screamworks are 'bad' just because their different from their previous material. Well, DS&BH was different from Razorblade Romance. For the most part, the songs on DS&BH were gloomier and slower than Razorblade Romance. Does that make DS&BH a bad album? Of course it doesn't. Each album has been incredibly made in its own way, and to fit its own style. Maybe instead of asking for an album of something more of which the guys have put their heart and soul into, enjoy this brilliant jewel of an album exactly how it is. Because the fact is that "Screamworks: Love in Theory and Practice" is an incredible album. And i think to ask something more than what took alot of time and effort to make is just being selfish. Give it a chance. And stop complaining about this wonderful splendid album. Because in actuality, there's nothing to complain about. Ville and the guys made a tremendous album with killer songs. Anyone who doesn't think so is just looking for something to nit-pick and complain about. HIM FOREVER!
It takes a few listens...
I was very disappointed upon my first listen, but some HIM is better than no HIM, Ville Valo is better than no Ville Valo.
I think the producer was to blame for a few little details, some parts of some songs sound a little toward the direction of other bands he had worked with (All Time Low, and whatever the other crap was) and some of Ville's screams don't fit to me...
But I've been listening to it all the time, the past two days it has been all I've been listening to. And it grows to be pretty good. I adore it now, but find as the cd goes on, the better the songs are. Like, the first few tracks I'm not as fond of, let's say In Venere Veritas, Scared to Death, and Dying Song are probably some of my least favorites, though I still like them. Heartkiller isn't that bad, but definitely not a highlight even though it was stuck in my head constantly until Screamworks was released. Currently, on my sixth or seventh listen to the album, I enjoy it indescribably when Love, the Hardest Way comes along, and from there on I tend to appreciate it more. I'm adoring songs such as In The Arms Of Rain and Shatter Me With Hope. Overall, HIM is taking a different direction, and though some aren't enjoying it as much, I would really recommend listening to the entire album a few times through before making your judgement.
(I have my tickets to see them in concert during their Spring tour BTW!)
