iTunes Review

Fans of Protest the Hero’s complex prog-thrash-metal who didn’t care for the synthesizers and string arrangements that dotted 2008’s Fortress are sure to rejoice in the Canadian quintet’s third studio long-player. Scurrilous plays with a more aggressive attack, as tasteful production emphasizes raw guitar tones and sideways melodies. And of course PTH’s fondness for labyrinthine arrangements gives songs like the opening “C’est La Vie” more dimensions than an impossible M.C. Escher construction. Rody Walker’s singing here is phenomenal. “Hair-Trigger,” a duet with Jadea Kelly, may be his best vocal performance to date. “Termites” is another standout, sounding as if all the Iron Maiden posters from the walls of Walker’s boyhood bedroom were being channeled through his athletic falsetto prowess as the band flirts hard with vintage British metal. Much of Walker’s lyrical content cleverly cements his personal perils with social commentary, making Scurrilous an album that reflects the tumultuous times of 2011 without getting too topical or obvious.

The Most Breathtaking Album I've Ever Heard

Although i am extremely passionate about music, i never review albums on itunes. In fact, this is my first review ever. This is hands down the most ridiculously flawless album i have ever listened to. PtH has always released incredible music, displaying top-tier talent and musicianship both as individuals and as a group. While PtH still maintains there unique and unmistakable sound, they have ditched some elements of their past albums that have been unfortunately ruined by the cliche and monotone hardcore/screamo bands today. rather, they take what they know triumphs over all others (Rody's incredible clean vocals and their melodic yet complex segments) and littered it throughout this entire cd. on top of that, Rody took the regins on writing the most lyrics on this cd, steering us away from their concept album style, to an album which each and every song we can relate to in all different ways. I PROMISE YOU this cd honestly made me sit in silence for about 20 minutes after i was done listening because i couldnt even express to myself what the frig just happened. their is every bit of PtH in this album, with so much more than i could have ever imagined.

this cd will not disappoint.

Highlights:
all of them.
im not overreacting, im one hundred percent serious. enjoy.

This is music, and its gashdarn BEAUtiful!

This is music, not that sad excuse you hear on the radio. Gaga and Bieber should take some notes on what true musicians sound like.

Biography

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Combining technical metal and post-hardcore instincts, Whitby, Ontario's Protest the Hero are comprised of Rody Walker (vocals), Tim Millar (guitar/vocals), Luke Hoskin (guitar/vocals), Moe Carlson (drums), and Arif Mirabdolbaghi (bass/vocals). Starting as many bands do — with a common musical passion found among high-school friends — Protest the Hero worked hard on developing their own identity; their sound soon became reminiscent of a combination of Coheed & Cambria, At the Drive-In,...
