iTunes Review

Coming two years after Silversun Pickups' acclaimed sophomore album, Swoon, Seasick doesn’t offer hints of what (if any) changes in style and sound will come with Silversun Pickups' forthcoming third album. Still, it'll satiate those who couldn’t get enough of Swoon. These three previously unreleased tunes were recorded during that album’s 2009 tracking sessions but were left off the final playlist. Lilting keyboards and a plodding rhythm section introduce the title track over heavily reverberated guitar ambience before Brian Aubert’s androgynous vocals slither in. Those who appreciate the band’s Smashing Pumpkins influence will find subtle similarities between the Pickups’ “Seasick” and “Obscured,” a b-side of the Pumpkins’ 1993 three-song single for “Today.” The more upbeat “Broken Bottles” blends driving guitar riffs with sultry “oh, oh, ohs” from Aubert, while propulsive bass and drums drive the song like it's a well-maintained muscle car. “Ribbons & Detours” closes with brooding post-grunge guitars strummed on the low strings as bass player Nikki Monninger takes the microphone.

Love this!

I waited so long for this. Worth the wait, however. Brian Aubert is a genius. If you're a Silversun Pickups fan, do yourself a favor and see them live. Amazing. Each one of the 4 is a true gift to be seen up on stage. Thank you for sharing your music with me!!!

Why wasnt this released with the album

Seasick has to be in the top five best song from SSPU.

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.

This is perfect as a filler for the ride in between new albums. Not completely new, as I believe these are releases of the songs not on Swoon, but still feels this way anyway. The songs deliver a slightly different feeling. The slower songs in the past don't very much sound identical to Ribbons & Detours. Broken Bottles brings it back to that Silversun Pickups feel with strong vocals. Seasick has good lyrics and an abstract way of conveying its meaning, but that isn't new to those who listen to them. This single album is exactly what the title spells. Buy it as soon as you can if you're a big fan. I'd highly recommend it.

Biography

Formed: Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s

Brian Aubert (guitar/vocals), Nikki Monninger (bass), Christopher Guanlao (drums), and Joe Lester (keyboards) comprise the swarthy indie rock stylings of Silversun Pickups. The quartet's textured melodies capture the hypnotic dream pop threads of My Bloody Valentine and pop bittersweetness of Earlimart, and such a blend has wowed their native L.A. since 2005. Silversun Pickups issued their debut release, the six-song Pikul EP, that same year while shared show dates with the likes of Brendan Benson,...
