iTunes Review

After the slow-burning experiment that was South of Heaven, Slayer reignited their pulverizing rhythms on Seasons In the Abyss. The opener, “War Ensemble,” is one of the band’s all-time classics. Drummer Dave Lombardo summons the force of a typhoon, as guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman lunge forward with relentless fury. Disappointed by his performance on the previous album, King even elected to take guitar lessons to sharpen his chops before recording. The hard work pays off. “Spirit In Black,” “Hallowed Point” and “Temptation” contain the band’s most ferocious and blindingly precise guitar work since Reign In Blood. The album is a master class in dynamics. Each song builds to a feverish climax, and “Dead Skin Mask” and “Seasons In the Abyss” are immense, multi-tiered epics. It was Lombardo’s last album with the group (before rejoining in 2006), and he turns in a performance that is nothing short of superhuman. The album is such an immense display of strength that some US troops in Bosnia would later blast the album as a warning to potential attackers.

Good album

There was a person who wrote a review that said that they're really anti religious. this is somewhat true but it doesnt mean its not good. as a guitar player i dont care about lyrics or vocals all i care about is the musical aspect of this amazingly awesome project that is known as slayer. I was recently watching Metal: A headbangers Journey, and they had an interview with Tom Araya.(bass/vocals). He was asked about his background and hes catholic. not satanist or whatever. and when asked about the title "god hates us all" he said " god doesnt hate. It's a great title." and he also went onto say the sometimes things that theyve written were reflections of society and that there picking up the dark reflections. so whoever you are that said there anti religious get a life. I definetly reccommend this to see all sides of Slayers musical journey definetly five stars.

buy the whole album before i kill you

if you've never heard it. If you insist here are the best songs in my humble but ultimately irrefutable opinion: 1. Born of Fire 2. Dead Skin Mask 3. Hallowed Point 4. War Ensemble

Perfection

THIS IS A PERFECT ALBUM. Every song that is on this record is as good as every other song. This is the perfect mix of RIB and South of Heaven. Let me put it this way: Reign in Blood + South of Heaven = Seasons in the Abyss The production is not quite as good as SOH. The kick drum tends to get lost during solo's unless you have a really awsome subwoofer. The guitars are also thicker and muddier than the goo between Al Gore's ears, but it is Slayer, who seem to be allergic to guitar tone, so that should be expected. The track picks for me are pretty much all of them, but my three "most favoritest" are "War Ensemble, "Spirit In Black" and "Seasons in the Abyss". The only track that I almost dislike is "Expendable Youth". It's slow and doesn't really jump out for any stellar momments. I also like the fact that there are no anti-Christian songs here (but there are plenty of songs about Hell, and I'm fine with those).

Biography

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Slayer were one of the most distinctive, influential, and extreme thrash metal bands of the 1980s. Their graphic lyrics deal with everything from death and dismemberment to war and the horrors of hell. Their full-throttle velocity, wildly chaotic guitar solos, and powerful musical chops paint an effectively chilling sonic background for their obsessive chronicling of the dark side; this correspondence has helped Slayer's music hold up arguably better than the remaining Big Three '80s thrash outfits...
