Gang of Four

(taken from press info) Gang of Four is one of the most radical, and radically important, rock groups of the last 30 years. Their music, starting with 1978’s Damaged Goods EP, offered a danceable solution to the problem of where four-piece guitar bands could go next after punk. They also provided the perfect answer to the question: how to be polemical without being po-faced, ponderous, banal or doctrinaire?

An incredible new song from Go4, and that's saying a lot

So. Here we have "Second Life," a new song from Gang of Four, and a possible indicator of what things will look like on their new album(!). But how does it stack up, especially next to their older classics off of Entertainment! and Solid Gold? It is, in a world, AWESOME. Seriously. If has all the hallmarks of a Gang of Four masterpiece: thumping, funky bass, really energetic and propulsive drumming, cynical and funny lyrics (and by the way, Jon King's voice has gotten great these days), and guitar that's jaggier than a goddam saw, yet here is also incredibly melodic. But what really puts it over the top is the production. Gang of Four has always made you want to move, but now they want to make you break stuff. Gang of Four has never rocked this hard. What we first saw in Return the Gift, which wasn't perfect, has been honed to incredible tightness. If this is an accurate preview of their new material, I feel confident in saying that it will be one of the best albums of the decade. Great stuff. The remixes are mostly worthless, with Whitey's being the only one that's remotely tolerable, but that's to be expected. I'd still pay 3.99 for the original song alone.

Great song!

Great new song by Gang of Four. Sounds fresh but retains their distinctive sound. This bodes well for their forthcoming album.

Formed in 1977 by Leeds University students Jon King (vocals), Andy Gill (guitar), Dave Allen (bass), and Hugo Burnham (drums), Gang of Four (along with the Fall, Mekons, and Liliput) produced some of the most exhilarating and lasting music of the early English post-punk era of 1978-1983. Fueled by the fury of punk rock and radical political theory, Gang of Four successfully welded the two in an inspired display of polemics and music that addressed the vagaries of life in the modern world (including...
