Best in their genre
As a rock fan, I loved Richie Blackmore in Deep Purple and Rainbow. He's one of the greats that inspired me to play the guitar. In Blackmore's Night Richie has certainly matured and perfected his mastery of the guitar. Secret Voyage displays a guitar aficionado at his very best. The beautiful and melodic tones of Candice Night add a sort of angelic feel to the music. The music gives you a sense that everything is okay in the world, so let's celebrate. Having said that, rock fans will most likely find this album a bitter pill to swallow, as they probably have past Blackmore's Night albums. But as a music fan in general, you can't deny the musicianship of this group, and you can't deny that this is the best music being made in the new age/folk genre. Period.
Fantastic guitar work + amazing vocals + layered orchestration + exotic sounds = Fantastic
I discovered Blackmore’s Night just weeks ago and they’ve rocketed straight to a place in my top 10 bands list a few notches above vaguely similar Trans-Siberian Orchestra (also lead by a former metal-head). I’m a fan of many styles, including alternative rock and even metal, but i find myself tiring of urban grunge and want to hear some SERIOUS music with richer textures and broader instrumentation. As i’ve scrambled to obtain all the Blackmore’s Night material i can find, i’ve discovered how widely their music varies and how much great stuff they’ve put out, but Secret Voyage is the pinnacle for the group. Blackmore’s guitar work, both acoustic and electric, is exceptional as always, and the group’s overwhelming richness and exotic sound totally immerses and transports the listener to a variety of places, periods, and moods. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC! I hope they tour in my part of the world. To substance addled metal heads who’ve stumbled upon this because Ritchie Blackmore’s name is in the mix, who dismiss bands with vocals which don’t sound pained and have more than 4 instruments, none of which has 3 distortion boxes connected in sequence; those who measure guitar skill by the number of notes one can play in a period of time while head bobbing, i’d say: You will HATE this! But anybody with an open mind should give this a listen. Sometimes it’s rock. Sometimes it’s folk with a celtic touch. Sometimes it’s both. “pop” is really an undeservedly vanilla label for music of this breadth. Trivia: Some may recognize “God Save the Keg” as being a super-charged version of the piece from Kenneth Brannagh’s “Much Ado About Nothing” wherein it was sung with Latin lyrics.
