iTunes Review

“He’s caught. Now what do I do?” Toni Braxton asks listeners in “Talking In His Sleep,” one of the most melodramatic cuts on Secrets, her second album and one that doesn’t shy as a whole from over-the-top emotion. “What do you think?” (Rhetorical question: There’s little doubt that just about anyone tuning in is on Toni’s side). The soap-operatics of that track, the hit “Un-Break My Heart” and “How Could an Angel Break My Heart” lean as much toward mainstream-pop balladeers such as Céline Dion as they do any sort of hard R&B. On the other hand, Secrets does boast another smash in “You’re Makin’ Me High,” a nicely stepping bit of soul, and “Come On Over Here,” in which Braxton effects seduction by claiming “I got more than you know what to do with.” You argue with her.

Braxton was soulful enough for R&B audiences, but smooth enough for adult contemporary; sophisticated enough for adults, but sultry enough for younger listeners; strong enough in the face of heartbreak to appeal to women, but ravishing enough to nab the fellas. Wielding such broad appeal, Braxton managed to score not one, but two...
