iTunes Review

Bluegrass prodigies channel the intensity of wide-eyed youth with a mature dexterity that seeps into their personality. Listening to Sierra Hull play mandolin is kind of like hearing Sean Watkins flat-pick a guitar or listening to Chris Thile play at speeds that could induce seizures. Not that the 16-year-old Hull plays with an athletic style so much as she plays with restrained feeling that opens up in all the right spots. And when Hull's string picking skills are juxtaposed to her endearing Tennessee drawl, this along with catchy songs wrapped in universal lyrics all provide for an undeniably awesome chemistry. On the instrumental "Smashville" her nimble fingers dance all over the fret board with fluttering rhythms that recall Nickel Creek's "Ode to a Butterfly." Like Nickel Creek's debut album, string deity Alison Krauss co produced Secrets (with ample help from Ron Block). Krauss' mentoring and befriending of Hull may be why the bittersweet "If You Can Tame My Heart" sounds subtly reminiscent of Krauss' "Foolish Heart" from 1987's Too Late to Cry. For a tune that sounds pulled straight off an Appalachian porch, try "That's All I Can Say" with its hootin' hillbilly chorus.

Super!

I had the great pleasure to see Sierra in concert with Ron Block (Union Station) in North Carolina some time ago and was totally blow away by her talent! To be so young and have that much stage presence and talent... that just doesn't happen every day... as a matter of fact, it rarely ever happens. With so many "artists" out there who only have talent after the wizards mix their music, to hear Sierra sing and play... all I can say is "WOW"!!!!! I had to find her cd and, once it was mine, I played that sucker until it was so hot! If you're a fan of country, bluegrass or just plain good music, you owe it to yourself to at least give these songs a listen. I look forward to a new cd from her... hopefully soon, and if she's ever in concert any where near me... I am there!!!!!!!

Bluegrass!

How can you dislike this? So good! The Hard Way is actually a Keith Urban song! Both very bluegrassy versions, but this is great too.

Great picking, but

holy overuse of the auto-tune, batman. Who knows if the girl can really sing? Auto-tuned bluegrass is sinful.

Genre: Country

Years Active: '00s, '10s

A child prodigy by any definition, Sierra Hull began playing mandolin when she was eight years old after being given one as a gift by her grandmother, and a year later she started playing guitar as well. Born and raised in the small rural community of Byrdstown, TN, Hull was soon playing jam sessions with other musicians in her family, and by 2001 she was entering local talent contests. Mentored and befriended by Alison Krauss, herself once a child prodigy on the fiddle, Hull was soon astounding...
