A great collection of songs written and performed by a great up and coming artist. This EP makes it obvious that he takes music seriously and his live performances prove that he definitely enjoys what he does.

That's right, I'm giving my own album a review

Preface: I'm going to do my best to write an unbiased review of my own album. For starters, let me say that this album was recorded on a budget with little to no experience on my part as to how to record an album (or even think about it). I knew I wanted it to be something more than the typical "acoustic singer/songwriter" album so my co-producer and I decided to make a textured album. No drums, no bass but at least something else to listen to other than me sitting with my guitar and singing into the mic. It came out well enough but like I said I was pretty green at the time and just in a strange place to be making an album. I'd only been in San Diego for a few months and I knew I needed something more professional than a few burned CD demos with sharpie marker written all over them. Review: “Who Says” is an incomplete song. The idea is there but it was never fully developed and I think that comes across. The chorus feels a little weak, which is slightly disappointing because the song starts really well. On the other hand, it is probably the most cerebral of the songs on the EP. I wonder sometimes if people get the transcendentalist references I make which ironically makes me worry about playing it live. “The Tongue” is one of my favorites production-wise. It sounds pretty much how I envisioned when I was writing it, just a lot slower. I think I’m most pleased by the way this song developed through the course of recording. The vocal performance was also one of the best on the album. Those things make it one of the most fun songs to play but that’s a whole different review. “Nervous Kid” is a good song. The melody always sounds a little underdeveloped and the song rests on the saccharine/sappy side but it’s so honest and personal that it overrides that feeling. The bridge seems a little out of place but it adds a level of drama to the song. The swelling guitar tracks that underlie the main acoustic track make it seem so ethereal which works as a great contrast to the lyrical content. I’m the least impressed with “Calm”. The vocal performance just isn’t there with this song and there’s just a lot that I’d do differently now. I think the bridge (white walls seem so gray…) is still one of the best bridge sections on the EP but if I could, I’d rework the verse melodies, lyrics and the song structure. “If I See You Again” is the obligatory love song that isn’t really a love song. It adds a lighter touch to an otherwise dark album. It has a slight reminiscence to pre-1940’s jazz with the bouncy rhythm and harmonic content. It’s easily the most listenable and accessible song on the album. Also, there’s an epic whistle solo. If “If I See You Again” is the most accessible, “Ignorance” would be a close second. I thought this song developed pretty well as it was the song I’ve been playing consistently the longest. The cellos added a lot of gravity to the track but I think it drags a little. It’s like my wannabe Jeff Buckley track. All in all, I give myself 3.5-4 stars- Credit for taking the risk to be different, but minus a star (and maybe a half) for not understanding what that means and overall performance/execution. But again, this is pretty biased (and maybe unduly critical). I’m not here to sell millions of albums or mp3s. I just want to push myself to see what I can create that will move me. Hopefully, that will move someone else too! As always, feedback and support is very much appreciated. I hope you’ll check out my next album, which will be full-length and with a more band-oriented sound. Thanks, Kenny
