David Pastorius

I am consistently in awe of David Pastorius' talent and hard work, as well as that of the other band members. Every time I hear the sharp strong precise and bold notes that he creates in an orgasmic flurry my mind goes back to when I first saw him perform on a small stage in Florida. Unpretentious and humble, it seems David never sets out to intentionally draw all of the attention in the house to himself while performing. Yet, in the same way that his last name inevitably evokes praise by bassists and bass enthusiasts across the world, his own individual ability to command and conquer the electric bass equally evokes standing ovations and spontaneous applause from everybody who has ever had the privilege of hearing him perform. This album is a definite MUST for anybody who is ready to take a fast furious and fabulous foray along a fretboard!

... moments of brilliance ...

yes ... David is JP's nephew ... now that we have that out of the way?

there are moments of compositional brilliance here ... moments only though. i also have a "thing" for steel drums (it's not a good "thing") so 2 tracks didn't even get a fair listen. i think i would be more satisfied if there was a consistent style throughout the work (the prog rock influenced material plays VERY well) ... Pastorius's chops are great ... no doubt about that. in fact? all the players shine throughout this work at various times (this is not a "solo bass" work by any stretch).

but? i'll likely not give this one a cover to cover listen again ... just not enough here for me to sit through it repeatedly trying to find something i missed. a couple tunes will make it to my Shuffle for variety ...

solid C+ ... aptly titled "sense of urgency" is a work hurrying to be too many things at the same time ...

Awesome

I had the chance to see them live at a bar in South Florida a couple years back and talked to David Pastorius. They were nothing short of awesome. If you are into the chill rock with a sort of island sound then definitely buy this album. Totally worth it, it's one of the few cd's I own that I can listen to the entire thing all the way through, not a track I don't like.
