Album Review

In 2007, the San Francisco Bay Area rock band In Reverent Fear released an album called Stomacher. Two years later, having undergone personnel changes, the band re-emerged calling itself Stomacher, and "reverent fear" might be a good description of its debut album, Sentimental Education. The quintet, now consisting of singer/lyricist/guitarist/keyboard player Jarrod Taylor, guitarist Stephen Reinhardt, guitarist Greg Francis, bassist Jeffrey Tollefson, and drummer John Lazarus, plays moody, atmospheric rock, over which Taylor sings in a near falsetto. His largely unrhymed words poetically treat matters of dread and doom, with only glimmers of hope peeking through. "I'm as desperate as I seem," Taylor declares over and over in "Parade," and by this, the penultimate track on the album, it's easy to believe him. Of course, this sort of ominous rock has brought success to several bands over the decades, even if most of them have been British. It's Joy Division-by-way-of-Radiohead, and Stomacher approximate the style effectively.

One of those bands that deserves more attention

Stomacher (previously called In Reverent Fear) definatly are going in the right direction with the sudden name change, feel and sound of this album. After listening to the opening track, you know you are in for a listening parade. Each track holds its own with its limitations in taste, groove, hooks and sound. For being an unsigned act, I think they pretty much "signed" themselves with this A+ performance of an album and strong promotional and marketing efforts. Vocals are spot on backed with moving and interesting abstract lyrics, bass and drums have a unique solid groove and guitars that penetrate the eardrum with odd sounds, angelic spacious leads, and nitty gritty jams. Note: If you purchase this album, be sure to set aside an hour or so to just listen to the entire album straight through as the band entended this album to be heard. Bottomline --- Best CD of the year!

definitely one of the greatest albums of 2009

The production for this album took around 2 years to complete, and i believe it pays off. it has everything: the soft eerie sounds of the opener Sentimental Education, the hard rocking of Peasant Song, sweet soothing of the Devil, the eclectic sensations of Dark Divider + everything else in between. Stomacher's use of delay/reverb effects is sincere perfection (tremolo in Ghost Wail is just gnarly!). The only critique that i have is that it is too short, i want to hear more!

well worth the wait

This album kills. Police is a stand out track showing an array of character this band has accumulated. This album is pretty dark over all, though it can get warm and pretty at points, it maintains an uneasy gloom. drumming and bass are absolutely amazing and contribute spotlessly to the vibe on each song. every song is worth it
