iTunes Review

When working together under the Sepalcure moniker, New York City–based producers Praveen Sharma (a.k.a. Braille, Praveen) and Travis Stewart (a.k.a. Syndrone, Machine Drum) have developed a healthy habit of one-upping themselves. Following their celebrated 2010 debut EP, Love Pressure, the duo came back harder and better in 2011 with the Fleur EP. And now Sepalcure's eponymous debut album pushes its bass-heavy ambient house even further than the preceding recordings. “Me” starts gently, with soothing ambient soundscapes and percolating beats that lightly pulse under lo-fi soul-singer samples. Speaking of samples, one can’t help but marvel at how cleverly Sepalcure incorporated The Who’s “See Me, Feel Me” into its own composition by the same name (or how it was able to clear the song’s licensing). Maybe it’s because the part Sepalcure used is so distorted and pitch-shifted that it’s barely recognizable. “The One” is the only song here that comes close to being dance floor–friendly.

The lead track was the highlight, based on scuffy percussion, texture washes, and alternately emotive and goofy cut-up vocal samples. Several...
