iTunes Review
The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn could never have stayed in Minneapolis. His big mouth was destined to get him into trouble. So off to Brooklyn he went with fellow former Lifter Puller guitarist Tad Kubler and established this brutal sextet. Together they marshal AC/DC power riffs to go along Finn’s Mark E. Smith-like storytelling about what Midwestern life meant to him. But where the Fall’s post-punk uses Smith’s rants to increase the alienation rate, Finn offers up tall tales and hard-luck stories about people he can’t stop observing and wishes deep down he could love. Sometimes it’s the drug addict who tells him “there’s gonna be a time when I’m gonna have to go with whoever’s gonna get me the highest” on “Hornets! Hornets!” or the vague drug and religious conversions that haunt the life of “Stevie Nix,” leading Finn to exhort “Lord to be 33 forever!” Overall, Finn is caught up in details that no amount of talking can get him out of. But then that’s what his crack back-up band is for.

Dirty Storefront Church Music..
Seperation sunday is like a bad drug habit... You use it once, and it feels really good, then you think about what you have done and you are not sure you are headed in the right direction. Before you know it you are right back to using again. When you preview these songs realize that what is in that short snapshot is NOTHING compared to what is inside. There are many genuine moments built in to each song that makes you think and become one with the song. This is storytelling and rock and roll at is strange best.. You will find a nugget of joy or pain in this album that you will identify with and embrace as your own personal anthem. There are many repeated phrases and themes, but they work in the context of the album letting you know that this is a complete work from first song to last. Lord to be 33 forever.. Highlights: Stevie Nix, Hoodrat friend, Banging camp Lowlights: Some repeated themes but nothing glaring.
You've been to Banging Camp too...
These guys are saving Rock Journalist’s and bloggers lives all over the internet. A mix of NOFX and the Boss, with Angus hitting the E chord at the right time, The Hold Steady are already being hailed by the in-Crowd as the saviors of rock and roll. Listening to the album, you are drawn in by the power of the guitars, bass, drums and keys. The hook is the lyrics, they have the sense of a drunk father at his daughters wedding, obscure and confused, but remembered for their poignancy later. Listen to the entire album, then review your favorites a figure it all out later.
Hold Steady...
While we pound you into the ground with riffs and snares. Some of the best rock-n-roll I've heard lately. Lyrics are a delicious mix of thought, image, emotion, and narrative. I'm a sucker for music that seems to deal honestly with life and faith...and the characters in this drama are full of honesty, life, and -- sometimes -- faith. Enjoy.
