Inspiration
Awesome!

Great introspective solo album from an overlooked songwriter
by SocialSoundSystemI have been tracking the release of this album since I read that Rolling Stone gave it 4-stars. They compared it to an "upbeat Elliott Smith" and an "acoustic Frank Black." Anyone who takes their music seriously would do wrong to overlook such comparisons.
Apparently McHugh had taken a break from The Beautiful Girls and went over to India for a little reflection and such. To some that may sound cliche but hell, I'VE NEVER GONE ANYWHERE TO REFLECT ON MY MUSIC. While there I guess he was taking a lot of malaria meds that give you nightmares and every night a blackbird would come to his balcony at 4am. Uhhhh... That's not creepy! He goes on to say that he thought it was teaching him something and explain it this way:
"In India there was a peaceful river. Like I thought about how the bird would come down to the river and drink, and the whole country could pour there love and sorrow into the river and the bird would drink it up and take it away. I thought it was a pretty cool analogy, about where I wanted to come from with my music.”
That is a very interesting way of looking at one's music and what you hope to accomplish with it. I look forward to watching Mat McHugh's music grow and progress from this album. Album favorites for me include "Under the Landslide," "Darling, This Scene Must End," and "Still Be Your Friend." I could really identify with the words and music there... Enjoy!
