Album Review
The artwork for Stars' Set Yourself on Fire is eye-catching and dramatic, like a protest painting or Keith Haring subway drawing. And that's before you find the inside shot of a woman in a ski mask and little else, contemplating a flaming hand torch. The art direction's boldness complements the maturity in Stars' music, where nothing's just indie pop and string arrangements sound as perfect as the keyboards. Vocalists Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan enunciate every word with careful precision, and they sing of remembered high-school romances, dead ex-lovers, and drunk current ones in basic but powerfully evocative language. It's a twentysomething life, told in short story form. In opener "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead," Campbell and Millan's characters don't rekindle their relationship, but they don't apologize for its end, either. "I'm not sorry I met you," they harmonize. "I'm not sorry it's over/I'm not sorry there's nothing to save," and the song's strings and brass build to a surging outro that's the wordless acknowledgement of everything they had. The title track is augmented by strings of its own, keening dizzily in the background of an undeniable electronic pop pulse, and "What I'm Trying to Say" does the same thing, but replaces the strings with electric guitar. "Reunion"'s near-perfect guitar pop brings to mind Spoon, and mid-album mates "Sleep Tonight" and "First Five Times" have different views on the intent of (and locations for) modern romance. The songs blend trumpet, keyboard effects, acoustic guitar, and electronic and analog percussion for an intelligent pop sound that doesn't need bells and whistles to be unique. Stars rely instead on melody, charisma, and lyrics as sharp as any modern essayist, and it's all they need to sell the quiet grandness of Set Yourself On Fire.
Customer Reviews
Pop done right.
Stars captures what our modern romance world is looking for but can never seem to get - the very essence of the thing itself. Alternating vocals from Amy Millan and Torquil Campbell have a tone to always match the song. The beginning, "Your Ex-Lover is Dead" could very well be the ending to the album - as it's so calm, and the two have accepted what's happened, and have no conflict left between the two. Poppish electronic indie bits, in "Set Yourself on Fire" and "The First Five Times" are what make you want to dance and bop your head. "Calendar Girl", with Amy Millan using the greatest voice I've heard (and I only have fallen in love with a bit over 300 bands), captures how people fear death and the end, with a simple chord structure and an even simpler beauty. Songs such as "Set Yourself on fire" and "Soft revolution" have really quiet and calm endings after a fast, catchy beat, which only takes you even further back as they create vivid images using 1 song, and how well they did the switch as well. There is an abundance of catchy bass parts, such as "The Big Fight", "Reunion", and "Your Ex-Lover is dead". The chord structures that work so well they work for the opening, verses, choruses, and ending of a song without getting tiresome show how well Stars write their music, such as "One More Night". They are very similar to the type of indie rock you'd hear from "Of Montreal", "Mates of State", and even a bit of "The Unicorns". The sweet vocals and nice piano parts are also very "Death Cab for Cutie" sounding. It's been a full year since I've had a favorite band, and mostly they haven't been my favorite by far. Stars is the most interesting band alive. Their concept albums are to die for. Not a penny of my money was wasted, as after I bought all their CDs, I almost feel like I robbed iTunes. I will be seeing these people in concert and cherishing every moment.
Probably the best of the year tied with Sufjan Stevens and Belle and Sebastian
When I bought this in June I was blown away. It was the summer and I had been listening to a lot of Bloc Party and Arcade Fire. Those were fabulous I have to admit but could not compare to this beautiful and brilliant album. Sure I said it was tied with albums but it is so suprising that this cd was at the level of the new belle and sebastian cd. Which all of you should by but at first I would like to rate this cd by each song just to show you what I felt when I first listened to this remarkable life changing cd. Your Ex-Lover Is Dead-10 stars- By far the best song on the album brilliant and sorrowful. But in a lovey-dovey kind of way you could say. And before I review the next song I would like to say that its nice to hear a song this refreshing and new. Set Yourself On Fire- 9 1/2- I wasnt to crazy about the synthe in the beginning but the synthe before they started singing was great with no doubt fabulous. Ageless Beauty-10 stars- Of course the main reason why I bought the record. Reunion- 7 stars- Didnt really enjoy this song just a bit to weird for me I suppose. The Big Fight-9 1/2 stars- A very enjoyable chorus probably one of the best on the record. What I'm Trying to Say-9 stars- Great not the best but still a brilliant song, and again the chorus grabbed my attention for its fun more happy mood. One More Night-91/2 stars- Extremely Beautiful opener just haunting and beautiful this song does continue to awe trust me. Sleep Tonight-10 stars- Not too many people seem to like this song but wow I mean I guess it may be that water pipe type sound. But in my opinion one of the best songs definitely. The First Five Times-9 stars- Not to crazy about the verses but I love the chorus just makes you think. He Lied About Death-9 stars- Enjoyable but very dark and moody at times but definitely a very enjoyable guitar in my opinion. At first it may sound crazy but it gets better trust me. Reminds me of Nine Inch Nails a bit. Celebration Guns- 10 stars- Definitely a softer song but still worth listening to if you enjoy violins. And trust me the song is beautiful and soft. Soft Revolution-10 stars- One of the best songs on the record the chorus is just blasting man wow it is so amazing with all the instruments and voices coming together at once.Just plain Amazing Calendar Girl- 10 stars- There was a stunning opener and now there is a fantastic finish that you did not expect it seems a bit like celebration guns but is even better when Torque sings the music amplifies his voice and i was in awe. From the words of the bands stars I will say " Calendar girl who is lost to the world stay in the world stay alive" The album-10 stars- Deserves it just so amazing for this canadian indie band that came out of nowhere with ageless beauty stunning is the word i leave with.
I breathe once again.
Oh right!!! I remember music now. I didn't know people still wrote it. Wow.
