Customer Reviews
Ridiculously good.
This is the best album I have bought in 2010, and possibly the last two years. The album is a collection of 'murder ballads', but you have to pay attention very closely to the lyrics to hear the sad, ironic, tragic stories told.
If you are hesitating, buy the song Cole Durhew. Listen to it 4-5 times, and I suspect you'll be back for the album.
Amazing Album
Mark and Jeffrey work so well together. This is an album that certainly has a "live" feel to it. It was recorded it just a matter of days and the thing that I really love about this is the song selection. You have some really well known artists being covered (Springsteen, Guthrie) but Jeffrey and Mark also select songs from some obscure artists as well (see the other review and listen to Cole Derew). I am a Neil Young fantatic...and this album contains flat out one of the best recordings of Powderfinger I've ever heard. Well worth the money!
Seven Curses
Mark Erelli and Jeffrey Foucaut understand how to sing a murder ballad. Very intense yet sparce arrangements gives the listener the straight out story line wothout a lot of distracting fluff. Many of the songs reminded me of the type of ballad Johnny Cash used to write, giving the listener the bare knuckles of the story. These are folk ballads with muderous twists. While listening to these songs I was on the edge of my seat like when reading a good mystery novel.
