iTunes Review

Since their start in the early '90s, this DC-based trio named after a cheesy but powerful sports car has consistently pushed the envelope of indie music. With a lot of chutzpah and an excellent graphic design sensibility, they've pushed high-falutin' "post-rock" towards musical ideas it otherwise would likely never touch. Uncannily, their worldview seems to exist in some magical space in-between ridiculous irony and fierce enthusiasm for these sounds. After a two year break, the group thankfully reunited to record this crazy patchwork quilt of spacey and vaguely danceable retro-futurist electronic rock. From the math-rock construction of the songs themselves to the science-fiction/action thriller atmosphere of the Escape from New York synth washes throughout, it's clear this is nerd music (in the best possible sense). Soundtrack reference points are hard to avoid with mostly instrumental groups, of course. "Rocktronica" is perhaps the lamest of all aborted musical terms, but it has never sounded as good as it does on Sex Change.

About damn time.

So, I have often been asked what albums I would bring with me to a desert island. "Futureworld" by Trans AM has always been, and will always be among my top 5. However, as every band is, Trans AM is hit and miss. Obviously "Liberation" was a huge mistake, and "TA" wasn't their best effort as well. But, with "Sex Change" they have returned to their eclectic roots to make great moogish, ballsy rock music.

awesome

This album is on of TA's best. The electronic vibe with great melodies and smooth transitions make this album great start to finish. It takes a listen or two but like all good albums it hooks you in. Songs like “north rising sun” and “4,738 regrets” make this a TA classic. Recommended for summertime play, preferably very loudly in an old drop top convertible. Enjoy.

great success

Buy "Shining Path" and "Conspiracy of the Gods"! This album smokes, actually buy it all!

Trans Am are loosely associated with the mid-'90s post-rock scene centered around Tortoise, Ui, Labradford, Windy & Carl, etc., and the Thrill Jockey, Kranky, UHF, and Southern labels, among others. Although a vast distance separates Trans Am's albums, all of them are concerned with an extreme, somewhat humorous reorientation of the clichés and conventions of rock music,...
