iTunes Review
Don't let the cover art throw you — Sex & Gasoline is hardly midlife crises themed, though Rodney Crowell's lyrics do often touch on how aging makes it increasingly harder to keep up with the ongoing roles that men and women play. His 14th album stands strong with a backbone of seasoned musicians supporting a wise and weathered bard who muses with unapologetic candor. Joe Henry's production balances classic tones with a contemporary clarity that mirrors Crowell's songs by equalizing rootsy with relevant. "Moving Work Of Art" is a poignant piece founded on acoustic arpeggios and a pedal steel over which Crowell croons about everyday gender roles and how men put women on dangerous pedestals (and how women often step up to them despite knowing better). He further ponders sexual identities on "The Rise And Fall Of Intelligent Design" where he hypothetically wonders if becoming a female would make him a better man. Henry steps out of the mixing booth and up to the mic to duet with Crowell on the exceptional "I've Done Everything I Can." It invites the listener to eavesdrop on two old friends talking about the difficulty of starting over following a great loss. Sex & Gasoline is as honest as music gets.
Customer Reviews
Just....WOW!
With well over 10,000 songs in my library, this is the first CD that has wowed me enough to write a review. From beginning to end, Crowell sees into the heart of a woman - from the cynicism to the hope - and put pefect words to perfect music. He has left me speechless...but singing the praises of this piece of work loud and far. I cannot recommend it enough
JUST LEAVES ME COLD.
I've been a huge fan of Rodney Crowell's since the early 80s. And being a huge fan means not always loving everything. Yes, an extraordinary songwriter. Yes, puts on a great, rollicking show. Yes, he knows how to bite with a lyric. But, this CD left me cold and bored. I listened to to it three times and tried to enjoy it but it's just not gonna be of his CDs that sticks around long in my CD player. The last CD left me cold as well. And I'm not exactly sure why. "The Houston Kid " and "Fate's Right Hand" just both seemed to be warmer and with a little humor. While the last two CDs did not. It's an odd review for me - mostly because I am always at a loss for words when Crowell disappoints.
Another Crowell Masterpiece
Starting with "The Houston Kid" in 2001 to "Sex and Gasoline", with "Fate's Right Hand" and "The Outsider" positioned in between, Rodney Crowell has rattled off 4 discs in 8 years now, which are arguably, the best of his career. I have 5 RC CDs, and these are 4 of them. I find it similar to the new found substance that Johnny Cash had with the American Recordings in the 90s. Just honest, intelligent, thought provoking lyrics. New and diverse. Is it country? folk? rock? alternative? I've seen these albums labeled all of these. Regardless of classification, it all comes under the label of good music. I'd start with this one and work my way backwards if you're thinking about checking it out a little more. You won't be disappointed.
