iTunes Review

Throughout their career Cheap Trick have been described as “Beatlesque” for their tight pop harmonies and concise pop hooks. Even the group’s distinct individual personas were in homage to the group that first inspired them. The band eventually treated audiences to an homage to one of the band’s favorite albums, the legendary Beatles album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2007. Of course, Sgt. Pepper was legendary for being an album concocted in the recording studio. The Beatles never intended to perform it live, having “retired” from live performance the previous year. Modern technology allows bands many more options and improved sound and Cheap Trick take full advantage, delivering a Pepper that doesn’t miss the recording studio a bit, but instead feeds off the live audience’s excitement. The guitars are fierce. The harmonies are tight. The orchestra, an Indian music ensemble and other special guests are focused and the songs come together with just the right enthusiasm to make this a worthy and spirited tribute.

Cheap Trick's SGT. Pepper's Live is an Amazing Tribute to the Fab Four!

Cheap Trick's reinterpretation of the Beatles' SGT. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band done Live is flat out amazing. Not just a tribute to the Fab Four, but rather an exhilarating performance that brings the classic album alive. Robin Zander blows me away with his vocal power and ability to take on the lead singing duties of John, Paul and RIngo. The musicianship of Rick Nielsen, Tom Petersson and Bun E. Carlos is spectacular. The Band and Orchestra nails every note, melody and harmony perfectly. To think even the Beatles felt this album was impossible to perform live and to hear it performed in one take, one show live as on this CD is an utterly breathtaking feat. The fact that both Geoff Emerick had a hand in the production and George Martin lent help and gave his blessing speaks volumes to the respect they have for Cheap Trick. Let me also note, that the "Medley Song" is actually Golden Slumbers, Carry That Weight and The End from Abbey Road and may very well be Zander's best vocal performance of the night. The Beatles are legends. Cheap Trick's live at Budokan is Legendary. Cheap Trick doing The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Live is an instant classic!

DUH!

They did it for charity. All proceeds go to finding a cure for prostate cancer. Do the research before you jump to conclusions about them not rocking anymore. It was a one-off night. And, what's so bad anyway about paying tribute to the band that got them into rocking in the first place? I think they did the Beatles proud. Come on, now.

Good stuff

I think cheap trick sounds very good on this recording, the other reviewers must be deaf. Could you do any better? This is a band that sounds great, just check out their latest called "the Latest" it is their best CD in decades. I don't know what these reviewers are talking about. The Beatles are one of Cheap Tricks strongest influences, and its great they did this tribute.

Biography

Formed: 1975 in Rockford, IL

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Combining a love for British guitar pop songcraft with crunching power chords and a flair for the absurd, Cheap Trick provided the necessary links between '60s pop, heavy metal, and punk. Led by guitarist Rick Nielsen, the band's early albums were filled with highly melodic, well-written songs that drew equally from the crafted pop of the Beatles, the sonic assault of the Who, and the tongue-in-cheek musical eclecticism and humor of the Move. Their sound provided a blueprint for both power pop and...
