Shades of Jade

The pleasurable arrangement of sound, melody, is what makes exceptional music, especially jazz piano. More especially still, new compositions threaded with it. I cannot stand un-melodious tinkering! That's why I treasure Elaine Elias. That's why I play her so often. Shades of Jade is full of such outpourings, cascading riffs, romantic haunting passages that linger. It's there in "All Yours," Apareceu and "30 Hours" along with superb bassist Marc Johnson and tenor Joe Lavano. Those new to Elaine Elias should play "A House Is Not a Home" (Deamer), "Where Did You Go" (Kissed by Nature), "That's All It Was" (Everything I Love). And Yes, hear her voicalize "Save Your Love for Me" (Around the City). Jazz melody is there too - beautifully whispered. Stanley Jones

A sumptuous album from a first-rate jazz ensemble

With "Shades of Jade," jazz bassist Marc Johnson has assembled a roster of talented musicians who are clearly very relaxed and comfortable playing together, yet spur each other on to ever greater musical heights. But it's pianist Eliane Elias (Johnson's wife) who really shines here. On tracks such as "Apareceu," "In 30 Hours," "Snow," "All Yours" and the title track, she balances a strong, confident playing style with an understated grace that never gets in the way of her fellow musicians. Pour yourself a glass of wine, turn down the lights and prepare to be transported; as an after-hours jazz album, "Shades of Jade" is seriously good stuff. Also, be sure to check out Elias's "Dreamer" and "Around the City," both of which feature Johnson on bass.
