iTunes Review
A remarkable guitarist with a percussive rhythmic style and nimble fingerpicking technique, John Doyle can thrill with his crisp dexterity or break your heart with a moving ballad. With Shadow and Light, his third solo release, his songwriting has grown to match his musicianship. Historical epics such as “Clear the Way” (about the Irish Brigade during the American Civil War) and “The Arabic” (named for the ship on which his grandfather immigrated to America) have rich tales to tell and are delivered in his warm, clear tenor. “Killoran’s Church/Swedishish” and “Tribute to Donal Ward/The Currachman” are gorgeous, two-part instrumentals, and the closer, “Selkie,” features Doyle on subtle electric guitar backed by upright bass. Doyle’s command of Celtic folk is evident throughout, while his love of American and British folk is displayed in songs referencing World War I (“Farewell to All That”) and the Alaska Gold Rush (“Wheel of Fortune”). An ace backing band adds depth and texture with fiddle, lap steel guitar, mandolin, bass, accordion, flute, and percussion.
Customer Reviews
Great guitarist!
John Doyle is one of the best guitarists in my opinion. His skills make his music. He has a distinct sound of bluegrass/ Irish music. He is huge in Ireland and should be bigger here. This record is one of the best bluegrass records I've heard here in the states and makes me miss my homeland.
Great Solo Stuff!
This is another awesome record by John Doyle. I first discovered him through Solas (which by the way is also worth checking out). I really liked the sound that Solas had, so I was very excited when I learned that John Doyle would be doing solo projects as well. He most certainly did not disappoint. In my opinion, John Doyle doesn't just operate within a genre, he defines a genre. This guy is seriously crazy good. Definitely buy this CD, pick up his other solo CD, and pick up every Solas CD. Favorite tracks are Clear the Way, Liberty's Sweet Shore, and Little Sparrow.
Home Run!
Seriously, this album is a home run if I ever did see one. Starting right from the first song (which, by the way, is my favorite) all the way down to the last song - this thing is hit after hit after hit. After hit. The guitar playing is astounding, and let's face it: it takes an absolute genius to come up with the song title "Swedishish." Total sidenote, but this CD is also great driving music. So if you drive, ever, then you need this CD. So chances are you need this CD.
