I wanna see a show!
Awesome!
Shadowplay is a really awesome band! They give their all when they are up playing on stage and it flows throughout the crowd. Every single band member gives their own style to every song which calloborates so perfectly. I can't wait for you guys to grow into a famous rock band.
Not Just Another Band From NJ
Having been a close friend of the bandmembers for quite a few years, I have to write a good review because they'll probably beat me up if I don't. On the other hand, it will be very easy to write a good, life-protecting review of this album (or, rather, EP) because they did a great job on it. The music on here is fantastic: seven finely-tuned hard rock songs that have a certain duality of beauty and darkness while still conjuring the desire to tap your feet, clap, headbang, or however else you wish to abuse your body in the name of rock 'n' roll.
From the opening of "Dark Hour", with an interesting drum fill and a crunching riff, the album establishes a certain sound for the band. While the songs are not repetitive, they all carry an indescribable vibe. Exciting guitar solos, powerful basslines, a thunderous approach to the drums. And, of course, the vocals, which are particularly startling; in the course of one song they transition from a smooth, restrained rumble to a high-pitched shriek. If you were half asleep when you popped this in the CD player you're definitely awake now. "The End of All Things" continues in a similar vein as the first track, yet creates an identity of its own with the sound of wind in the beginning.
A definite highlight of the album comes in the form of the love songs. "Like a Phoenix" and "Autumn Sky" form a suite about failure in love with a small glimmer of hope for better days. It is an incredibly emotional piece, boasting several stunning guitar solos and atmospheric backing vocals in the second song. The piece constantly moves from ethereal to aggressive, expressing the intense emotions of love and anger that the protagonist feels. It's unusual to see this much darkness cradle optimism, but that seems to be the overarching theme of many Shadowplay lyric. In any case it works.
"Clocktower" and "Pulse" perpetuate the dark mood but erase all hope of happiness with their bitter lyrics. The strongest moment among the two is the bass solo towards the end of "Pulse", rapidly firing at the ears. On the "Ides of March", the album closes in a different style. Here the dominant instrument is not the guitar, but instead the piano, and this brings forth some great chords. The extended song shows the slightest shades of progressive rock, demonstrating a diversity to the band's sound; listen for how the piano changes the tempo between verse and chorus in a tricky way. It will be interesting to see if they pursue this style further. Whatever they do, the song is great, calming down the mood after the intensity of the other six tracks.
As the piano notes fade out the time comes to make your final evaluation, and if you're a fan of hard rock then you will definitely be satisfied, maybe even thrilled, by this album. For those who fear more generic hard rock a la Buckcherry and the like, be not afraid. There is a far greater emotional depth to the lyrics than you'll find in most other contemporary releases. The album has enough twists and surprises to garner the interest of the more cautious listener. In short, Shadowplay, to appropriate a Frank Zappa line, is not just another band from NJ. There's something to these five guys, and expect to hear from them again soon.
