The Used B-side Record

Shallow Believer is a B-side record containing songs from their first three albums. Most of them are from their latest album,"Lies for the Liar," while others come from their previous albums, "In Love and Death" and their self-titled. Dark Days is the only one i've actually heard before this came out. When this record was announced, I had to get it, because i'm a huge Used fan. I got to listen to it, and it was great. "Sun Comes Up" is probably my new favorite song and "The Back of Your Mouth" is well enough my favorite too. The collection of B-sides is a great record to get if you're a major Used fan. I mean, you can't go wrong listening to new songs. Most of them have been on previous "Special Edition" CDs, but if you missed out on that, this is a new opportunity to get them. The Used rock.

A Better B-Side Album Than Most "Polished" Efforts Out There

When a compilation of ten bonus/rejected tracks can sustain an entire album, you know you're dealing with some indisputably talented musicians. This album is extraordinary, encompassing everything that makes The Used what they are. Standout tracks are Dark Days, Devil Beside You, Sun Comes Up. Sick Hearts is perhaps the most radio-prepared song I've ever heard by the Used - just begging to become an FM single. Choke Me, for all of you that have the Used's debut album, will be very familiar, as it is the bonus track at the end of "Pieces Mended." It's still as hardcore, and you'll still have no idea what to think when Bert screams "F--- My A--" near the end of the song. I certainly don't. And of course, they close with the beautiful Tunnel, as heard on Lies for the Liars special editions. A perfect acoustic ending to a nearly flawless album that, in my book, surpasses some of the music that so-called "artists" these days take years to dish out - and without even half the emotional intensity as the Used have been able to pull off. My only regret is that SB doesn't include what may be the Used's best b-side ever: Pain. If you haven't heard it, flock to Youtube immediately and prepare to be dazzled. Album 100/100 Can't wait for more...

Biography

Formed: Orem, UT

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '00s, '10s

The members of the Used had to overcome poverty, homelessness, and substance abuse, not to mention the straitlaced attitudes of their hometown of Orem, Utah, to bring their screamo-tinged brand of post-hardcore to life. But they persevered and earned a contract with Reprise Records, releasing their self-titled debut album in June 2002. Having only played a handful of shows around Orem prior to their record's release, the band — vocalist Bert McCracken, guitarist Quinn Allman, bassist Jeph Howard,...
