Album Review

After ten years with the critically acclaimed group Caedmon's Call, Derek Webb set out to pursue his creative vision. Proof of his conviction comes in the form of his first solo release, entitled She Must and Shall Go Free. What Webb has accomplished with the opus is a grand statement about love, the church, and life through the eyes of a man that humbly serves Christ. With cuts like the title track and "Lover," Webb paints a rich musical picture with an acoustic brush stroke that floods the canvas. "Nothing" is a country joyride with a honky tonk groove, while the simplicity of the acoustic guitar on "Wedding Dress" drips with reverence. There are so many poignant moments on the opus that each cut tells a story with a bold commitment to truth. The country-tinged "Saint and Sinner" could have come from the Lost Dogs, while "Take to the World" is sung with Jars of Clay's Dan Haseltine, creating an instant pop classic. The theme most visited is the relationship with the church and the frailties of humans. Closing out the disc is the opulent cut "The Church." The tune is sung from Christ's perspective, relaying the need for believers to uplift the church body. The tune is a fitting end to the opus as a piano melody is bolstered by swelling harmonies between Webb and his wife, Sandra McCracken. She Must and Shall Go Free is easily one of the best-written releases of the year. It's richness and worshipful tone could win Webb Artist of the Year honors.

Five stars for Wedding Dress alone

I always appreciate christian artists who don't skimp on the truth - they are very few and wide in between, but they are out there. Derek Webb has a way of voicing his own opinions and rebuking without sounding preachy or pretentious. The imagery in 'Wedding Dress' is powerful, Derek takes this from Ezekiel 16, the story of the adulterous bride, and relating it to our lives and how we choose the things of this world over the sacrifice of Christ, we go to church on Sundays and put God on like a 'wedding dress' so to speak and forget about God the rest of the week. I think music should not only be of the highest quality, but it should encourage and convict - Derek manages to accomplish all of these things.

Honest soul-searching...

I have more respect for Derek Webb than any Christian singer/songwriter working today. Here are songs that explore the difficulties of the Christian life and the many challenges faced by the modern church sincerely, not just superficially. Such a departure from both the overly romantic praise ballads and the cookie-cutter theological statements that pervade most CCM. Aside from the brilliant, challenging lyrics, Webb's voice is fluid and passionate. Favorite tracks: "She Must and Shall Go Free", "Lover", "Wedding Dress", and "Beloved"

The Reviewer is Right On

I can't believe I'm the first person to write in about this album. Everything the reviewer says here is true. This is one of the best Christian cd's of the last decade, and easily Webb's best solo album to date. Inspired lyrics and (unlike on some of his later releases) gorgeous music to match. Oh, and Wedding Dress is one of the most powerful folk/pop songs ever written, period.
