Fantastic EP

I've been anticipating a legitimate release of "She Stayed as Steam" since "Brother's Blood" was first released. Finally, after many months of anticipation, here it is!

The title track is actually quite different than the 2008 Demo that is floating around. It is much more polished and takes a new, different and pleasantly unexpected feel. Needless to say, I was surprised when I first heard it. The song starts off with a quiet, airy feel before erupting into sheer awesomeness before finishing with some last hurrah's at the end. I would have been just fine with a polished, stripped down acoustic version like I have been accustomed to hearing however I am very glad that Kevin Devine put a distinctive, catchy and powerful spin on it.

The second track, "Big Bad Man" sounds more like the Kevin Devine I was expecting to hear but thankfully, the wonderful atmospheric feel from "She Stayed as Steam" carries over quite nicely in both the quieter and the louder parts. Overall a great song with some deep lyrics and a melody that showcases the variety we're used to from Kevin Devine.

"Breathe Breathe Deep" and "Another Bag of Bones" are both remixed songs from "Brother's Blood". The first showcases a completely different, beatsy and above all, catchy revival to an already fantastic song, "Hand of God" off of his recent LP. Easily my favorite song on the record next to "She Stayed as Steam".

The second remix, "Another Bag of Bones" take a different direction from the first remix by keeping the same general feel of the original while emphasizing key parts of the song through use of a different musical medium. Overall, it feels like a fresh reinterpretation while staying true to the original intent of the song.

The "She Stayed as Steam" EP really, is a must for all fans of Kevin Devine. It showcases his variety very well while providing a great supplement to an already fantastic album, "Brother's Blood".

If you really like the previews, you should consider ordering the vinyl as well which includes "Chelsea Hotel No. 2", a Leonard Cohen cover and a "unplugged" version of the popular "Ballgame" with extended material towards the end of the song.
