Album Review

Donna Summer's brassy, matter-of-fact mezzo does not play the sexy sanctified diva, and her musicians' crisp, loud beats don't evoke rapture or delirium. Instead, she and her rhythm men live up to the title of "She Works Hard for the Money." Here's praise for a waitress' 12-hour workday that sums up Summer's own post-dance queen job status, as well as disco fans' own spotlighted lives and maintains the pressure, from the steel-and-synth riffs of "Stop, Look & Listen" to the impatient tenderness of "People, People." No one writes about love with as mesmeric a sense of wonder as Summer confesses in "Love Has a Mind of Its Own," "Unconditional Love," and "I Do Believe (I Fell in Love)."

Dance Pop is Born Again

After the somwhat lukewarm critical reception and slightly overblown production of the Quincy Jones helmed, "Donna Summer" album, Donna Summer, the singer and songwriter got back to basics and back to story telling—the thing that she does best. Summer blasted nay-sayers regarding her career longevity and stormed back onto the charts and hearts of radio listeners with the feminist, anthemic title track. Once again, Summer proves the master at fusing dance sensibilities with a rock and funk edge—see tracks, He's a Rebel and Woman. While this collection is not as consistant as say, The Wanderer or Bad Girls, Summer's voice is in peak form and volume. However, gospel singer, Matthew Ward holds his own on the inspired, secular duet, Love Has a Mind of it's Own. The album's closer, I Do Believe I Fell in Love is consistenly a fan favorite as its maintains a falsetto-delivered and restrained vocal until near the end which segues from ballad to pulsating transition—ultimately exploding into a driving tempo with Summer wailing her passionate declarations of love—stylistically reminiscent of the title track.

Donna Summer's title as the "Queen of Disco" wasn't mere hype — she was one of the very few disco performers to enjoy a measure of career longevity, and her consistent chart success was rivaled in the disco world only by the Bee Gees. Summer was certainly a talented vocalist, trained as a powerful gospel belter, but then again, so were many of her contemporaries. Of major importance in setting Summer apart were her songwriting abilities and her choice of talented collaborators in producers/songwriters...
