iTunes Review
Ship Ahoy, the O’Jays album that consolidated their superstardom after the world-beating Back Stabbers, is best known for “For the Love of Money” and its lowdown, phased bassline. It’s the album's toughest cut by some measure, but Ship Ahoy’s pursuit of Philly-style message soul hardly ends there. “Put Your Hands Together” is an uptempo jam whose payoff (“And let us pray”) gives a spin to an R&B and rock commonplace. “Now That We Found Love,” a mellow romancer that expands its brief to “spreading it all over the land,” was later a hit in a revved-up version by reggae kings Third World. The most startling moments, however, come with the title track, which places the ruminations of a slave ship’s denizens in the trio’s mouths.

Soul Classic
Although their previous album containing the classic Backstabbers brought them worldwide recognition, this is the album that put The O'Jays on the musical map. Not only does it contain not one, but two soul classics (For The Love Of Money and You Got Your Hooks In Me), but the hits keep coming with Put Your Hands Together & the original version of Now That We Found Love, which was later a worldwide hit for Third World. The O'Jays, along with songwriter/producers Gamble & Huff also easily prove that they can handle socially concious songs like Ship Ahoy & Don't Call Me Brother as well as the classic Norman Whitfield productions for The Temptations.
Another Classic Album By the O'Jays
"Ship Ahoy" is a fine follow up to 'Back Stabbers". This CD is an excellent mix of message songs (Put Your Hands Together, For the Love of Money, Don't Call Me Brother, This Air I Breathe, and the haunting Ship Ahoy) with seductive slow jams (You Got Your Hooks In Me, Now That We Found Love). "For the Love of Money" is one of the funkiest jams of all-time and "Put Your Hands Together" was a Soul Train dance line favorite. "You Got Your Hooks In Me" has become a quiet storm classic. "Ship Ahoy" is definitely a terrific album and a fine example of Philly soul at its peak.
