With Shiva Station, Jai Uttal has created a brilliant combination of traditional Indian music, rock, blues and jazz. This music is full of beautiful melodies, deep grooves, unexpected accents and juxtapositions, and manages to convey a sense of deep meditation and pure joy. The production, by bassist/producer extraordinaire Bill Laswell, is crisp and powerful, as is the musicianship throughout. The only thing that may give some listeners pause is the fact that almost all the songs are in Sanskrit, which is great for Sanskrit speakers, but perhaps not so accessible to others. Even without knowledge of the language, however, the music is so powerful that you won't be able to keep from moving.
