Customer Reviews

Great effort from a great band!

Back in the early '80s, Samson was one of the most recognizable names in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, only topped by bands like Saxon, Judas Priest, and, of course, Iron Maiden. Speaking of Iron Maiden, this is a must-have for fans of Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson's work; as you can probably tell, he's the singer on this album.

Bruce's vocals are what make this album so enjoyable. The band's previous album, Head On, was a more hard rock-oriented album than Shock Tactics. The Air Raid Siren at this time was just beginning to develop his often-imitated voice, and with this album he finally found what he had been looking for. Shock Tactics is one of his finest performances, with the wailing vocals of Maiden's fourth studio album Piece of Mind coming to mind as inspired by this album.

Also in the picture is one of the most underrated guitarists of rock, Paul Samson. His riffing and soloing are both unparalleled in their originality, with an obvious influence from Deep Purple's Ritchie Blackmore ever-present. His rearrangement of Russ Ballard's Riding With the Angels transforms the original song into a high-energy, Deep Purple-esque track.

The rhythm section deserves high praise, as well; it maintains a solid foundation for the rocking that is to come.
