Album Review

Cock Sparrer's second album, but their first to actually see the light of day, was released in 1983, following their revitalization as progenitors of the Oi! movement. It's a brittle and, in places, brutal offering, although it's tragic that its best-known cut, "England Belongs to Me," was co-opted by the right wing, at a time when rock journalism was seriously beginning to examine the links between Oi! and the Fascist movement. Cock Sparrer were tarred and feathered accordingly, and the band's reputation still bears the unjust scars. But, away from that controversy, Shock Troops leaves you in no doubt as to where its allegiances lie, politically and musically — this is Oi! par excellence, with at least half its contents standing proud among the band's finest moments, while the Captain Oi reissue adds a string of equally crucial bonus tracks. Welcome back!

Customer Reviews

Streetpunk CLASSIC! One of the best ever...

This album is one of those indispensible streetpunk albums, one of the albums that every skinhead or chaos punk MUST have in his or her collection. It's different than one might expect, as the songs are more melodic than some oi! bands, and the singer doesn't the typical gruff voice that most oi! bands do. In fact, the singer's voice is somewhat feminine sounding at times. It can be jarring at first, but once you get used to it, you'll love it. The best tracks are: "Argy Bargy," "I Got Your Number," and "England Belongs To Me," but really, the whole thing is a winner.

Great

Wonderful PUNK!

Oi! Oi! Oi!

It's great to see this on itunes! If you've ever laced up, braced up and hit the streets then you've already heard this but, if not, then check it out! Bands like Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, Street Dogs, etc, have all taken a few pages from Sparrer's book. If you have ever wondered what streetpunk, oi, skinhead music (without the racism) is all about then here you go. Not as abrasive to newcomers as Business or 4Skins, it serves as a good jumping off point. Buy the whole deal if you can, if not then definitely grab Riot Squad, Watch Your Back, Take Em All, and I Got Your Number. You'll be shaving your head in no time!!!

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

One of the first Oi! bands, Cock Sparrer was playing loud, raw, Cockney working-class anthems as early as the first wave of British punk, although record company difficulties prevented them from issuing much material until the early '80s, when the Oi!movement was well underway. The group formed in London's East End in 1975, originally as a hard-edged pub rock combo in the vein of Dr. Feelgood. Four of the members — vocalist Colin McFaull, guitarist Mick Beaufoy, bassist Steve Burgess, and drummer...
