Album Review
After two exemplary releases, Traffic released Shoot Out at the Fantasy Factory, which begins with the title track, based on a guitar riff reminiscent of the recent Deep Purple hit "Smoke on the Water," and continues through the lengthy "Roll Right Stones," the folkish ballad "Evening Blue," reed player Chris Wood's instrumental "Tragic Magic," and the uncertain self-help song "(Sometimes I Feel So) Uninspired." Lyricist Jim Capaldi was co-credited with Steve Winwood as the album's producer, and he may have contributed to the cleaner mix that made his words easier to understand. Meanwhile, the rhythm section had been replaced by Muscle Shoals studio aces David Hood and Roger Hawkins. Capaldi sings no songs here, and Wood's flute and saxophone, so often the flavoring of Traffic songs, are largely absent.
Customer Reviews
A Little Carried Away, Wouldn't You Say ???
As stated by a previous reviewer (Seven City Blues) - This album is not for everyone. And although I appreciate Traffic greatly, I also appreciate being frugal with my hard earned money. "Roll Right Stones" is NOT worthy of the $6.03 pricetag iTunes charges for it's infamous "Album Only" offering. There's no valid justification in gouging customers like that for an album that comprises of only five selections, four of which are only .99 cents each. Do the math. Apple and iTunes certainly haven't.
The "Shootout at the Fantasy Factory" experiment
This album, in it's artistic scope, is flat out great. Everything from the album art to the jam session melodies speaks of the artistic experiment. I think the album art is the best ever. I like Traffic a lot. But I bought this album on the album art alone. And then after I listened to the album a few times, I was not disappointed with what my imagination was thinking was inside musically. The musical experiment going on inside matches the geometry and floating bodies and wide open spaces and flailing limbs. The colors chosen match the bluesy, veiled, dark, compelling instrumentation and lyrics. This is for sure one of my favorite albums because of the creativity and complex melodies pushing the envelope. If you love art it is well worth the purchase of the entire album.
Shoot out at the Fanatasy factory
I loved this group, liked this album however its uneven and somewhat boring if you don't love the group. Not for everyone just die hards such as myself. download "shoot out at the fantasy factory" the muscle shoals rythmn section shows their stuff.
