Karajan brings menace and mystery to the music
Any good classical reviewer will tell you that this is the best version of the 10th available. I'm jealous that you'll have the opportunity to buy it for a mere $10 - music this powerful and well-played is priceless. Of course the 10th was DS's first major work composed after the death of Stalin, the man who menaced over Shostakovich and other Russian artists through the thirties and forties. And there's a great deal of Stalinism buried inside here to harrow the listener. As with much of DS's work, there are odd juxtapositions of moods, comic themes playing next to menacing strings. I'd say without a doubt, this is one of the top five symphonies of the twentieth century. What are you waiting for?
Best Recording Out There
I love Shostakovich's compositions, and think that this interpretation by Karajan really digs deep. While it is an old recording, it is still the highest standard of this symphony. The Berliner is in their best form here, and shows great mastery in the full range of dynamics.
Mysterious, Dramatic, Exceptional
As an ensemble, The Berlin Philharmonic brings mystery and drama to this work, which is performed with exceptional artistry! Bravo!!
