Album Review

The musical touchstone for the British trio Muse is obviously Radiohead and that fact is crystal clear from the smoldering opening cut, "Sunburn." Their John Leckie-produced debut, Showbiz, is strong on angst-filled vocals, esoteric lyrics, and dramatic shifts in sonic dynamics. Hailing from rural England, singer/guitarist Matthew Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenholme, and drummer Dominic Howard average 20 years of age, so there's plenty of potential for them to grow into a sound that is more of their own. In the meantime, Bellamy does an impressive job of aping the quirky, nervous vocal tic of Thom Yorke on songs like the mid-tempo, Mellotron-driven "Muscle Museum," and he cuts loose vocally on the soaring "Cave" and on the lovely, mournful ballad "Unintended." Showbiz hints at the potential in this young band, and it should be of interest to many Radiohead fans.

They Always Forget Showbiz

Of all Muse’s albums Showbiz is the most over looked. Sure it’s only their debut, but this album is awesome. I can’t begin to explain its greatness. It’s set in the perfect register for me (being a girl) to sing along with. I can’t do that with all their albums. At times the vocals remind me of a naughty child protesting as it’s sent to its room. You can hear the panicky desperation from leaking though every note in songs like “Muscle Museum”, “Cave”, and “Escape”. Other songs like the deep, dreamy “Unintended” and “Showbiz” give you a glimpse of the band that will develope in the future. The signature mark of the album is probably the heavy bass lines and piano. It only becomes more disgusted as it goes on, then finally trails off with the exhausted “Hate this and I’ll Love you.” The album closes with the creepy lullaby bonus track “Spiral Static.” Yes, ITunes Reviewer, “Showbiz” IS probably the strongest track, but Muse is NOT Radiohead. The comparison is getting old, especially now. They’re all just repeating what the first guy said. That seems to be what official reviewer likes to fall back on when they review any alterative band. When in doubt: “it sounds like Radiohead” or “it sounds like Coldplay.” Forget that guy. Radiohead and Muse fit completely different moods for me. Nothing will ever compare to Muse. They’re impossible to replicate. I can replay this album forever, and never get sick of it. So, it you don’t plan on buying the whole album (but you really should), defiantly don’t miss Sunburn, Muscle Museum, Cave, Falling Down, Showbiz and Escape.

WHAT?!

RADIOHEAD?! You're kidding me! Muse is a music all its own. I LOVE Muse, and I don't see why iTunes is being all "Raidohead? Well, duh." about this. Besides, they're BRITISH! That means they're good enough to come to America with their awesome music, duh.

Thom Yorke ain

Radiohead is great and so is Thom Yorke, but Matt Bellamys falsetto blows Yorke out of the water. They sound similar yes, but this record is way more rock..... aaaaaand that kid can and still can SING. Check out Origin of Symmetry for some insane high notes.

Muse's fusion of progressive rock, glam, electronica, and Radiohead-influenced experimentation is crafted by guitarist/vocalist Matthew Bellamy, bassist Chris Wolstenholme, and drummer Dominic Howard. Bored by the sleepy life provided by their hometown of Teignmouth, Devon, the three British friends began playing music together. They started the first incarnation of their band while only 13 years old, changing the name of the group from Gothic Plague to Fixed Penalty to Rocket Baby Dolls as time...
