iTunes Review

Austin, Texas’ country rock hopefuls Shurman teamed up with some friends and Americana dignitaries to record their very first album of twangy holiday carols. Blues Traveler’s John Popper, Brendan Hill and Paul Naffah of The Refreshments team up for an opening cover of Phil Spector’s “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).” But instead of Spector’s Wall of Sound, the band build a wall of tube-toned guitar distortion over which Popper pulls and blows his harmonica with that instantly recognizable honk. The Mother Truckers’ Teal Collins jumps on the microphone for “It Don’t Feel Like Christmas” where her duet with singer Aaron Beavers echoes moments of Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty. Phil and Steve Hurley (from rootsy power pop band Gigolo Aunts) do an awesome job of covering The Band’s “Christmas Must Be Tonight” before bass player/songwriter Mike Therieau delivers an album standout with the hard-driving boogie-rock of “Santa Get Me Outta Here,” evoking The Faces and Exile era Stones. A heartwarming take on “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” closes featuring The Boone Elementary Holiday Choir.

Shurman does it again!

If this album doesnt get you in the holiday spirit then I dont know what will- A great collection of rock n roll holiday classics only Shurmanized! I especially like the guitar work and an appearance from John Popper on harmonica doesnt hurt either. Instant holiday classic worth 10 bucks- happy holidaze to me!

A christmas album with a little twist

The music Shurman puts out stands out as it is, and now they put a twist on Christmas songs, only as they know how. It is like an eggnog that has been spiked…it was good to begin with, but add the fun and spice, and 'bam,' now you have something special. I highly recommend this holiday album to update your holiday collection and to begin new traditions. : )

A great holday album

Easily my favorite holiday album. The boys from Shurman have put together a great collection of songs (along with their guests) that will be the background for when my kids are opening presents on Christmas morning. I also like the 12 Days of Christmas, Shurman-style.

Biography

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s

Part of the reason Los Angeles' Shurman rock with more of a twang than other L.A. bands is lead singer Aaron Beavers' Texas roots and drummer Damon Allen's Georgia upbringing. The two met when Beavers' family moved from Texas to Allen's hometown outside of Atlanta. They were both 13 when they first entertained the idea of starting a band, but college separated the two when Beavers headed to Hawaii and Allen moved to L.A. They didn't lose contact. Beavers sent Allen every single one of the 100 songs...
