Album Review

BoDeans leader Kurt Neumann's solo disc, named after his dearly departed canine companion, was produced during a bumpy period both personally and professionally (a divorce and the BoDeans being dropped from their major label). Nevertheless, rather than dwell in latitudes of despair, this is the kind of rootsy pop/rock you've come to expect from Neumann based on his work with the BoDeans. There are a few surprising electronic sonic touches — "Happiness" and "And Then This" are downright booty-shaking, in fact — but the flourishes aren't jarring or anachronistic, merely cream in the coffee. Nevertheless, Neumann is at his best with straight-up, hook-ridden pop\rock, evidenced by tracks such as "Like I Do." Neumann wrote, produced, and entirely performed this sturdy effort.

While Taking a Break, Kurn Churns Out Good Stuff

As a huge BoDeans fan, how can you not enjoy Shy Dog. Kurt is my favorite part of The 'Deans, but I thought this effort was very solid. There are a few songs that I adore, like "Perfect Blue Sky," "Shy Dog," Like I Do,"Absolution," and "Breath Away". Keep it up Kurt, please tour the west coast with Sammy, if not, put out another Album, I'll buy it like your others!

Sweet album

I'm sure many longtime BoDeans fans weren't too fond of this album when it was first released as it doesn't really sound like the BoDeans at all - but it's not supposed to. Frankly I'm glad it doesn't. Kurt mixes alternative-rock with early-2000's hip-hop-influenced funk and some elements of acoustic rock and U2-ish stuff. Though the songs aren't quite as catchy as the stuff he's done in the past, "Perfect Blue Sky", "Venus", "Hopes", and "Shy Dog" are all solid tunes. Interestingly, Kurt's managed to stay modern through the 80's and 90's even though he's in a roots-rock band. I've always had a feeling that, in a way, the BoDeans hold him back, and this album sort of proves it. Kurt's been working on some new solo stuff (Google "kurt neumann myspace", it's the first one) that would've been awesome if he had released it with the BoDeans instead of Mr. Sad Clown (aka their "we give up" album). But, back to the point, this album is generally well-produced and consistent, and has a song or two that will please even the biggest 'Deans purist. Check it out, it's worth the $9.99.

While the BoDeans were re-charging in 1999 and 2000, singer/songwriter and guitarist Kurt Neumann ventured out on his own to produce his solo debut Shy Dog. Neumann rose to prominence when he and fellow singer/songwriter and guitarist Sammy Llanas formed the BoDeans in Waukesha, WI.
