Interesting Early Sibelius
Early Sibelius it may be, but Kullervo is worth listening to. There are more than just a few hints of the mature, beloved of the composer we have come to know. Any true Sibelius fan will love Sir Colin and the London Symphony for introducing us to this piece.
In your face
For new Sibelius recordings, this is certainly the crew you want to have assembled. The LSO is a personal favorite, and these live recordings compare favorably to their Sibelius cycle on RCA from the '90's. My only gripe with some of these "LSO Live" recordings is that the miking is really "in your face". This is especially true in the Shostakovich they've put out with Rostropovich, but I noticed it with this "Kullervo", too. Great playing, though.
Davis at his Prime!
A few weeks ago I saw Sir Colin Davis at Symphony Hall with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He really is a world-class conductor, and is at his best when conducting Sibelius.
