WOW!
I'm no classical audiophile and I don't know if this recording is noteworthy in comparison to others but, as a professional musician who loves all music played with conviction, I have to say that Gil Shaham's Tchaikovsky is amazing. His violin's sound is so rich and full, I can only assume that it is either a Strad or the devil's own golden fiddle. His tone, vibrato, harmonics, phrasing, and technique is amazing and beautiful. Also, the orchestra is nicely balanced and I feel compelled by both the strings, brass, and woods. I don't know if this is a "definitive" recording or "appropriate to the period". Honestly, I don't care. This performance is spellbinding. iTunes must know that this is great since you either choose the whole album or one track. Bravo iTunes for always making us buy the whole album even if we don't want to! This time (for once) I agree with you.
OUTSTANDING!
This is by far the most flawless recording of the Sibelius Violin Concerto I could find. His interpretation and style is perfect! This is a MUST BUY! I also loved his Tchaikovsky! He has two recordings of this concerto, so pick your favorite one.

Not only that you are not going to regret, but you will consider this is top Tchaikovsky and Sibelius violin concerto recording you may ever get. Shaham is simply amazing in this one! I've compared his version of Tchaikovsky violin concerto with Heifetz's, Mutter's and Perlman's and his is still my favorite. As for Sibelius violin concerto, I've compared his version with Mutter's and Heifetz's, and I would still pick his as my favorite.
